Highlights
  • Eidkjosen - A small population of shot from Tromsø. Here we can see some local industries and an industry centre in the district.
  • Helland - Hella, is a prominent fishing spot next to the tidal current “Ry Straumen”. This area is full of wildlife. As well as some ancient rock carvings. Down by the ocean, is a “Fiskehjell”, where we make dried Cod.
  • Straumsgården - Welcome to Straumsgården, a coastal farm steeped in history on Kvaløya. Explore timber buildings with sod roofs, echoing centuries of coastal life. Witness the boathouse and boat landing, reminders of reliance on the sea. Stroll through gardens and inner buildings, imagining life as it once was. Don’t miss the outhouses and surrounding fields, where the farm’s legacy is palpable. For a glimpse into Norway’s past and a serene escape, visit Straumsgården.
  • Kvalnes - Viewpoint down by the ocean, with great views into Malangsfjorden. As well as a shoreline full of exciting secrets.
  • Buvikvoll - The road goes over a stretch of the mountain used by a herd of a hundred reindeer, as well as a few frozen lakes. Here we might see the herd grazing on top of the hills. In the right season, we will also have the chance to walk on the ice.
  • Sommaroy - The fishing village of Sommarøy covers the island of Store Sommarøya as well as part of the neighbouring island of Hillesøya and many smaller surrounding islands. The village is a typical fishing village with great local fishing fleets and substantial fish processing and other industries. The islands are also popular among the locals, for it’s many white beaches, water lagoons and long hours of sun.
  • Sjotun - Sjotun is a small village in a fjord of-shut. In mid-winter, the fjord freezes over complimenting the many old and well-preserved fishing houses and communities.
  • Kattfjorden - One of the four fjords we pass by on the tour, this fjord is a great place to experience the frozen fjord ice. We might also be able to meet with locals fishing out on the ice and see what they catch. Experience floating sea ice while facing up at the immense mountains around us.
  • Kattfjordeidet - Now we have left “Kattfjorden” and are on the mountain pass going over to the next fjord. This mountain pass has some of the most dramatic mountains around on the island of “Kvaløya”. This is also the local ski paradise, in high season attracting a few hundred skiers and mountainers a day. Here we might see the skiers on the way down the mountains.
  • Ersfjorden - Ersfjorden is the third fjord on the tour. It is a great spot to end the day, seeing the light bounce off the tops of the mountains on both sides of the fjord.
  • Kaldfjorden - The last fjord on the tour. Also, the fjord where I spent most of my childhood. The fjord is not as dramatic with its views as the other fjords. However, I have loads of stories from the fjord. This is also the spot with the best chances to see seels and porpoises.
