- Porta Nigra - During the Middle Ages, the Porta Nigra was transformed into a double church! A staircase from the city led to the second floor, and another on the side led to the third floor. There was also a floor above the open middle section. This gate was part of the city wall encircling Trier, which stretched over six kilometers. Unlike many Roman-era buildings, this gate was not demolished because, in the eleventh century, a hermit named Simeon lived there. Simeon was later canonized, and the site became a pilgrimage destination.
- Stadtmuseum Simeonstift - The Simeonstift is the monastery associated with the hermit Simeon. The museum features modern exhibition spaces within the historic core of the building. Its collection spans from the early modern period to the twentieth century, including original medieval figures from Trier’s main market and the original market cross from 958.
- Hauptmarkt - The pillar with the market cross here commemorates the 882 AD Norman invasion of Trier, after which the archbishop relocated the market square from the river to its current site, where the Hauptmarkt remains today. The cross’s pillar is a Roman-era granite column from the Cathedral. The original cross is housed in Trier’s city museum, Simeonstift. Notably, the surrounding houses are mostly half-timbered, a construction method using wooden beams. The market cross from 958 is a replica; the original is in the Simeonstift museum.
- St. Peter’s Cathedral (Dom) - The Dom is vast and was once the largest church north of the Alps. Initially, it was a double church; the northern part is now the Dom, and the southern part is the Liebfraukirche. The Dom is Germany’s oldest episcopal church, with its core dating back to a Roman Basilica from the fourth century AD. It was likely built on the site of Helena’s palace, Emperor Constantine’s mother. The Roman brickwork of the original fourth-century rectangular basilica is still visible outside.
- Liebfrauenkirche, Trier - Liebfrauenkirche is among Germany’s oldest Gothic churches, built on the foundations of the old double church in the thirteenth century. The exterior is richly adorned, especially the west façade with its portal. Most sculptures are replicas, but the heavily weathered tympanum sculpture above the door is original, depicting episodes from Christ’s youth.
- Kaiserthermen - “Thermen” is Latin for bathhouses, common in Roman cities. Rome had 856 by the year 300! These complexes offered bathing, sports, and massages. Trier has three such complexes: the Kaiserthermen, Barbarathermen, and the baths at the cattle market. The Kaiserthermen are Trier’s largest bathhouses, built in the fourth century AD and plundered in the Middle Ages.
- Karl Marx House - This house, the birthplace of Karl Marx, is now a permanent museum. Marx, a nineteenth-century German thinker, was a founder of the labor movement and a key figure in socialism and communism history. He authored “Das Kapital” and “The Communist Manifesto,” two highly influential works.
- Frankenturm - Constructed around 1100, the Frankenturm is a Romanesque residential tower. It is unrelated to the Frankish tribe, named after its resident, Franco von Senheim. The construction technique mimics Roman methods, with many such examples in Trier. The tower later served as a residence for the archbishop’s servants.
