Medina of Kairouan - Established in 670, Kairouan thrived under the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century. Even after the political capital moved to Tunis in the 12th century, Kairouan remained the main holy city of the Maghreb. Its rich architectural legacy includes the Great Mosque, with its marble and porphyry columns, and the 9th-century Mosque of the Three Gates, earning it a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Visitors will spend 2 hours exploring Kairouan’s old Medina, admiring the Great Mosque, Zawiya of Sidi Sahâb, and the Three-Door Mosque. The tour concludes with a traditional Tunisian lunch at the recommended El Brija Tourist Restaurant.

The Great Mosque of Kairouan - This is the oldest Islamic religious building in the Muslim West. It was established in 670 during the first campaign to annex Ifriqiya to the emerging Muslim Empire. General Okba Ibn Nafaa, after selecting a site at the edge of the northern mountainous foothills for his troops, quickly built a government seat and oratory in mud bricks. By the ninth century, after several modifications, it appeared as the Great Mosque known today. This unique monument perfectly conceals an architectural “syncretism”. The materials used for its construction were sourced from ancient sites predating the Islamic conquest, while the building’s overall appearance, especially the minaret, reflects a distant oriental influence. The result is an original structure with simple yet elegant features. The interior decoration is exuberant, with a stunning display of geometric and floral patterns carved in fine marble on the mihrâb facade and engraved in precious wood panels on the minbar, the pulpit for preaching.

Chebika - Chebika is near the town of Tamerza, in the Djerid region of southwest Tunisia, just a few miles from the Algerian border. It is a small mountain oasis town surrounded by a dry desert region, just north of the salt lakes or Chotts. Chebika is typically the first stop on the way to Tamerza. These oasis towns are dramatic, with rugged rocks and steep ravines. Chebika, located at the foot of the Djebel el Negueb mountains, is so sun-exposed that it is known as Qasr el-Shams, meaning Castle of the Sun. Once a Roman outpost called ‘Ad Speculum’ and a mountain refuge for the Berber people, Chebika still attracts many tourists to see its impressive rock formations, waterfalls, and narrow gorge. The scenery is striking, with jagged pink rock formations. Palm trees thrive in the ravine where their roots find water. A footpath leads to a stunning pool of azure water with a waterfall cascading into a small stream. The gorge was formed by a water source that carved these natural formations, creating a mountain oasis.

Chott El Jerid - Chott El Jerid is a vast lake during the wet season, showcasing exceptional natural beauty. This site is a testament to life and ongoing geological processes in landform development, with significant geomorphological features. The surrounding regions of Chott el Jerid contain prehistoric sites in the Kebili region, with snail beds from the Capsian age (8,000 years) or Neolithic (5,000 years). Chott experienced wetter periods 100,000 years ago, transforming into a permanent lake, mainly due to springs. In some areas, the lake’s bottom was covered by 25 meters of water. Traces of aquatic life, in the form of fossilized shells, have been found on the current chotts’ borders, dominated by Cadmium. Ecological analysis reveals spectacular richness. The presence of Mediterranean waterbird populations has earned the site classification as an Important Bird Area.

Built on the site of a Roman villa, the museum replicates its spatial organization: a central courtyard surrounded by a peristyle leading to rooms. Exhibits include sculptures, giant mosaic paintings, and artifacts from excavation campaigns in Thysdrus and the surrounding area.

Tamezret - Tamezret is a charming Berber village with around 800 residents. Unlike the region’s troglodyte villages, its dry stone houses cling to the hill and blend with nature, resembling a small medieval town. It is one of the oldest villages in the region. Visitors will be introduced to the inhabitants during a guided village tour.
