Worth the trip - Thank you Visit Alay for an amazing trip! The Best of Kyrgyzstan tour allowed us to trek in both the Karakol and Osh areas. Not only were the staff at Visit Alay friendly and helpful, but all our hosts at the guesthouses and yurt camps made us feel very welcome. Special thanks to our driver, guides and porters. Baiysh, Alytn, Kesh, Almaz and Kutush thank you for giving us the adventure of a lifetime!

Exactly what I wanted - Cannot recommend this tour enough!!! They’ve really thought it through and put in some of the best hikes and views throughout the country. I didn’t realize how varied and diverse Kyrgyz terrain and views were. My favorites were the first and last day of hiking. On the first day, I remember thinking this was the most heaven like views I had ever seen. Not only were the hikes beautiful, but almost every aspect of the tour were. Our accommodations were better than expected — highlights included one night camping literally right on the turquoise waters of Ala-Kul lake, one night in a beautiful yurt in Altyn-Aryshn valley, two nights literally on the edge of Issy-Kul and Song-Kul lakes. Even the drive from the north to the south had such scenic passes and valleys. These are some tough hikes, but very manageable. I was the slowest hiker in our group by far, but Baiysh (lead guide) was strategic in stopping the group at the most scenic viewpoints, where they could take pictures and I could catch up. On steep downhill areas where I felt unsteady there was always Baiysh, Shadi (guide for the second portion), or a porter that were there to literally lend a hand. I am so glad that the second portion had horses to carry our items — our horsemen Nurlan and Sherlik were dependable. Our lead guide, Baiysh, was one of the best guides I’ve ever had! Supportive, knowledgeable, adaptable. He was always sharing bits of Kyrgyz culture, interacting with everyone in such a respectful way, and was able to problem solve masterfully when our car broke down — there was no delays in the schedule at all. Shadi, our guide for the second portion, was also so supportive and knowledgeable. He was able to answer all of my never ending questions and also anticipate problems before they even arose. The two were such a dream team — one of our trek members has a birthday on our last day of hiking and these 2 somehow managed to get a cake and candles to our remote yurt camp and throw a dance party. Please do this tour if you get the chance!

unique experience, both the country and its nature, and the warm Kyrgyz people. - We became one with the breathtaking natural beauty, rushing rivers, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, colorful palettes, flowers, jacks, marmots... We were adopted by the warm-hearted Kyrgyz people, primarily those who spend their summers in the mountains in their yurts, chatting and eating together. The guide and his support were very professional and warm.

Great Kyrgyzstan experience - We had an amazing experience. Kyrgyzstan is such a beautiful country with beautiful people. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough. Too many things to highlight but the best are the people we‘ve met and experienced the tour with. Definitely one of the highlights of our year.

Amazing country and guides, problematic food and water hygiene - I took a 19 day trekking tour of NW and SE Kyrgyzstan with a group of 12 people from our local outdoor club in July of 2024. We trekked in the Ala Kul mountains, in the Alai mountains, and in the Pamirs to Lenin basecamp. We had an AMAZING time, with top-notch guides and mostly excellent logistics support from the Visit Alay team. The company has set up yurt camps and guest houses at convenient locations all around the Alai Mountains trek, which made that trek particularly amazing because of the opportunity to stay in remote yurt camps and guest houses with a local family at a great location relative to the day's trekking. All of the guest house and yurt camp staffs were incredible, preparing widely varied meals and responding to all of our dietary preferences. We had excellent side tours including an eagle hunting demonstration, a yurt-building demonstration, and a felt-making class - all highly recommended. We have just a few suggestions for improvements. * CBT (Community Based Trekking) is the logistics partner for the Ala Kul trek. We had packed based on Visit Alay's instructions, but when we got to the first camp on the trek we discovered that CBT had rearranged gear between our trekking bags without telling us or our guide, and the number of porters was cut back without asking us or our guide. As a result, it was very stressful to rearrange everything in a big hurry, and the porters ended up carrying enormous loads. After the fact we found that our gear had been dropped on the ground during the rearranging and we had dirt all over our stuff (recognizing that the dirt was thoroughly mixed with animal dung, which meant that our hands and tents would have dung on them, contributing to GI illness). * Everyone in our group got significant GI illness during the first two treks, and particularly on the Alai trek. Multiple people were seriously incapacitated, including two who had to go to the hospital for dehydration near the end, and multiple people had to ride the emergency horses. We think that this came from a number of causes: ** Dung on our hands and gear from the ground, without hand sanitizer on the tables to clean up before dinner. Hand wash stations were provided but they were filled with river water which was likely to be contaminated too. ** Outhouses became very difficult to keep clean once everyone had diarrhea. ** Hygiene practices were not sufficient to assure water and food were not contaminated with bacteria that our western systems are not used to (even though all the families were VERY service-oriented and served amazing meals!). Fresh cheeses and yogurt were served which obviously would have had local bacterial cultures and we shouldn't have eaten it. Fresh fruits and vegetables may have been washed in unboiled water, we couldn't tell, but a fresh carrot salad did seem to contribute to illness. Shared dishes encouraged passing germs around. The way these camps were staffed (with just one, max two women running the whole production along with taking care of kids), it would have been hard for all dishes to be washed in boiled water and all fresh foods to be washed in boiled water before serving. Each yurt camp and guest house was run by a different family which makes it much more difficult to establish western-style hygiene practices. We faced the same challenges on past treks in Peru, but on those treks we had just one support team controlling food and water at every camp, and once we had implemented these practices in partnership with our outfitter, no one got sick. Lenin basecamp was an amazing experience, but they didn't have nearly enough outhouses for the number of people staying there, and all the outhouses were overflowing when we arrived. Hand wash stations were out of soap and sometimes water, and who knows if the water had been boiled anyway. Go to Kyrgyzstan - you will love it for incredible scenery and authentic local culture! And you won't find an outfitter better than Visit Alay.
