THIMPHU- PHOBJIKHA (135 KMS/5-6 HOURS)
Dochula Pass - Travel through Dochula Pass (3,088m/10,130ft), pausing to enjoy the view and admire the 108 chortens, mani wall, and prayer flags. On clear days, the majestic Himalayan peaks to the northeast are visible, including Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongaphugang (7,060m), and Gangkar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest peak at 7,497m. Visitors can hoist prayer flags and make incense smoke offerings.
Gangtey Monastery - Gangtey Goenpa, the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition, was established in 1613 by Gangteng Sangngak Choling and overlooks the Phobjikha Valley. In the evening, participate in evening prayers or engage in a discussion on Buddhism with a learned teacher, followed by dinner with the monks.
DAY 3 – GANGTEY SHEDRA
Gangtey Monastery - Scheduled Activities:
- Participate in morning prayers from 5:30 AM to 6:15 AM.
- Attend an evening meditation class from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Samantha meditation, loving-kindness, or Vipassana.

DAY 4: GANGTEY TO PUNAKHA (78KMS/3HRS)
Punakha Dzong - Explore the ancient Punakha Dzong, a fortress-monastery dating back to the 17th century, beautifully located at the confluence of the Mo and Pho Rivers.
Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Optionally, take a short walk across the rice paddies to visit the nearby Chimi Lhakhang, a charming temple built by Lama Drukpa Kunley. Legend says he subdued the demoness of Dochu La with his “Magic Thunderbolt of Wisdom.” A wooden effigy of the lama’s thunderbolt is preserved in the Lhakhang, and childless women visit the temple to receive a Wang (blessing) from the saint.
Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten - After lunch, hike to Khamsum Yulley. Built by Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, this Chorten is a splendid example of Bhutanese architecture, constructed over eight and a half years with details drawn from religious scriptures.
PUNAKHA TO PARO (120KMS/4HRS)
PARO TAKTSHANG HIKE (4-6 HOURS)
Paro Taktsang - Embark on a hike to Taktshang Monastery, one of Bhutan’s holiest and most beautiful sites. Known as the tiger’s lair, it derives its name from the legend of its founding, when Guru Rinpoche, revered as the second Buddha, arrived from Tibet in the 8th Century, flying across the mountains on the back of a tigress.
Kyichu Lhakhang - Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples.
Dzongdrakha Temple - Take a detour to another sacred site in Paro where great masters have meditated.
