• Het Plein - Discover the story of Willem van Oranje, the Father of the Fatherland, and his pivotal role in the Dutch revolt during the 80 years war.
• The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery - We will head to the Mauritshuis museum, where I’ll share insights about the building and its history. This museum houses some of the most renowned paintings by Johannes Vermeer.
• Binnenhof & Ridderzaal (Inner Court & Hall of the Knights) - We will take a brief stroll through the parliament complex’s square to see the Knight’s Hall. I’ll explain the historical and current significance of this site. With a bit of luck, we might spot some ministers or even the prime minister!
• Hofvijver - Located in front of the parliament building and the prime minister’s office (the little tower!), the Hofvijver pond holds significant historical importance and some amusing stories.
• Thorbecke Monument - Next to the Hofvijver stands the statue of Thorbecke, which is closely tied to our constitution. You’ll learn more about its relevance.
• Lange Voorhout - Known as the Champs-Élysées of The Hague, this elegant street features multiple embassies, an art museum, a famous hotel, the temporary senate building, a statue gallery of Dutch heads of state, and other notable (royal) buildings.
• Noordeinde Palace - We will visit the working palace of the Dutch king. Depending on the flag, we can determine if he is currently in the country. Let’s find out!
• Grote Kerk - We will see the Grote Kerk (“Big Church”) of The Hague. What’s that stork doing on top of it?
• Statue of Johan de Witt - This statue commemorates the only head of government in the Netherlands who was eaten by an angry mob. It sounds bizarre, but you’ll learn the full story.
• Rotterdam Centraal Station - On our way to Rotterdam Blaak, we’ll pass by the city’s central station, which opened in 2014 and boasts a spectacular design.
• kunstwerk ‘Santa Claus’ van Paul McCarthy - From the car, we’ll glimpse a peculiar statue officially named ‘Santa Claus,’ but known by another name…
• Rotterdam Blaak - This UFO-shaped train station is located in Rotterdam’s market area, where the city originated. Here, you’ll disembark and begin the city tour.
• Markthal - An iconic building in the city, the Market Hall (Markthal) features apartments on its two sides and a variety of international foods inside. We’ll sample some Dutch cheese and admire one of the world’s largest pieces of art on the ceiling.
• Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk - Near the modern Market Hall stands a 14th-century church whose tower miraculously survived the bombing of Rotterdam. Now primarily an event venue, you’ll learn about its history and that of Erasmus, a famous native.
• Kijk-Kubus - The Cubic Houses, designed by Piet Blom, are a unique architectural feature from the 70s and built in the 80s, representing a ‘village inside a city.’ We’ll tour one of these apartments, with the price included in the tour.
• Old Harbour - In the Oude Haven (Old Harbour) area, now a vibrant recreational spot with terraces, you’ll see more of Piet Blom’s architecture and old ships undergoing restoration. The real port of Rotterdam is now located many kilometers west.
• Witte Huis - The White House (Het Witte Huis) is the most prominent building in the Old Harbour area and Europe’s oldest skyscraper, dating back to 1898. You’ll learn about its significance and spot remnants of German bullet holes.
• Willemsbrug - Before returning to the endpoint, we’ll head to the river Maas for a stunning view of Rotterdam’s skyline.
