4x4 Tour into the steppe to David Gareji monastery and Sighnaghi
David Gareja Monastery - One of the intriguing aspects of driving in Georgia is the ever-changing landscape. We travel south past the largest auto bazaar in the Caucasus, through the industrial area of Rustavi, reaching a hilly steppe region that feels untouched by both God and humanity. Occasionally, we may spot rare birds or explore former military training grounds. In the Middle Ages, this solitude became a sought-after retreat for Georgian monks, who lived in caves and developed a regionally significant agriculture with cattle breeding and even viticulture. The gravel roads at David Gareja are enjoyable to drive, providing a chance to get acquainted with the vehicles today. Overnight stay in Sighnaghi, the wine town with views of the Caucasus. Driving distance is about 200 km.

We drive near the Azerbaijani border, along the winter pastures of the Tusheti shepherds, through the Samukhi plain on a large round trip to Dedoplistskaro. Enjoy snacks and stops at beautiful viewpoints along the way. Overnight in Dedoplistskaro town. Driving distance is about 130 km.

On steeper sections, gear reduction is necessary as we leave the forest zone at 2300 meters, climbing higher along rugged slopes towards the Abano Pass at 2866 meters. At the pass, a wide panorama unfolds to the north, revealing many chains of high mountains, with Tusheti ahead. The drive remains challenging for the next one and a half hours to Omalo, through ever-changing landscapes of sky, mountains, gorges, rocks, stones, old avalanches, and fallen trees, past solitary defense towers and small villages.
