- Tarquinia - Tarquinia (Italian: [tarˈkwiːnja]), previously known as Corneto, is a historic city located in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy. It is renowned for its ancient Etruscan tombs found in the extensive necropoleis or cemeteries it covers, earning it UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
In 1922, the city was renamed after the ancient city of Tarquinii (Roman) or Tarch(u)na (Etruscan). Although the vast wealth and size of the ancient city are not easily visible today, ongoing archaeological efforts continue to uncover glimpses of its former splendor.
- Cerveteri - Situated 35km northwest of Rome, Cerveteri is a tranquil provincial town that hosts one of Italy’s significant Etruscan sites – the Necropoli di Banditaccia. This ancient burial site, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the sole remnant of the once powerful Etruscan city that existed here.
- Necropoli dei Monterozzi - The Necropolis of Tarquinia, also known as the Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi, is located on a highland east of the city, containing approximately 6000 tombs. Many of these tombs were originally covered by tumuli with chambers carved into the rock below.
The oldest tombs date back to the 7th century BC. Among the thousands of graves, at least 200 are adorned with numerous frescoes, representing the core of Etruscan art that has survived to this day and the largest collection of ancient paintings before the Roman era. Alongside the necropolis of Cerveteri, it is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Etruscan civilization.
- Museo Nazionale Cerite - Located in a medieval fortress on the former acropolis of ancient Caere, this fascinating museum showcases archaeological artifacts discovered at the nearby Necropoli di Banditaccia.
The exhibits, displayed in two halls, include terracotta vases, black bucchero tableware, and jewelry. The centerpiece is the Euphronios Krater, a renowned 1st-century-BC vase that was returned to Cerveteri in 2015 after being displayed in New York and Rome.
