The Enigmatic Walls of Taroudant
As the sun rises over Taroudant on January 4th, the city awakens under a clear sky, the air crisp and invigorating. The ancient walls, standing as silent sentinels, whisper tales of a bygone era. These earthen fortifications, stretching over 8 kilometers, are not just barriers but storytellers of the city’s rich history. The Saadians, who once called this place Mohamédia, left behind a legacy etched in the very fabric of these walls.
Embark on a journey through time with the Zamana Capital Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. As you pass through the grand gates into the medina, the labyrinth of streets unfolds like a well-kept secret. The mosque stands at the heart, surrounded by souks where artisans craft their masterpieces. The air is filled with the scent of leather, copper, and silver, each piece a testament to the city’s enduring craftsmanship.
“8 of us did a wonderful tour out to this historic site. It was extremely hot that day but Mohamed made sure we had shade here and there. We went to a Berber village and had the most delightful lunch. We were not expecting this and we were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food tasted. Our host for the meal wanted to show us an oasis and off we went to see that and that was very nice as well. We would recommend this tour highly. Believe it or not, we even got to see the goats up in the trees eating the leaves off the argon tree. We thought this was a joke when our guide showed us the trees on our way for the tour. Well, we did see it and all eight of us thoroughly enjoyed our God and our time in Morocco.” - Reviewed on 2017-11-30
The Oasis of Tiout: A Hidden Gem
The following day, January 5th, the skies over Taroudant transition from overcast to a brilliant blue, casting a golden hue over the city. It’s a perfect day to venture beyond the city walls to the Tiout Palm Grove, a verdant oasis that beckons with promises of tranquility and discovery.
Join the Tiout Palm Grove Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and immerse yourself in the lush landscape that once served as a backdrop for cinematic tales. The journey begins with a stop at Aït Hassassa, where goats defy gravity, climbing argan trees in search of nuts. As you arrive at Tiout, the ruins of an old kasbah stand as a testament to the passage of time, now a restaurant offering panoramic views of the High Atlas and Souss Valley.
“An interesting trip to an original Morocco - I was picked up in Taghazout by a separate driver and taken to the group in Agadir. Then we went straight to Taroudant. We drove around the old town and then visited the market. The guide explained a lot. Then we went on to Tiout to the oasis for lunch. We had a delicious meal in a very authentic restaurant before walking with another guide down through the oasis with its many palm trees. Here you can also have a donkey carry you for a small fee. But you should be a good walker on this tour! These are not well-developed paths like in Germany. It was very, very hot, but there was water to buy everywhere along the way.” - Reviewed on 2024-04-17
