Embracing the Rain: A Cultural Sojourn in Taroudant
As the rain gently taps on the ancient walls of Taroudant, the city unveils its hidden indoor treasures, inviting travelers to explore its rich cultural tapestry. This weekend, as the skies weep over the red-walled city, the opportunity to delve into its historical and artistic gems becomes even more alluring. The weather, with its cool embrace and occasional gusts, sets the perfect backdrop for a reflective journey through time.
Begin your exploration with the Zamana Capital Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. This guided tour offers a deep dive into the city’s storied past, where the Saadians once reigned supreme. As you wander through the medina, the rain-soaked streets echo with tales of yore, and the scent of wet earth mingles with the aroma of spices from the bustling souks. The tour provides ample time to explore the medina’s labyrinthine alleys, where artisans craft exquisite leather, copper, and silver goods. The rain adds a layer of mystique to the experience, as the city’s vibrant colors shine through the droplets, creating a living canvas of Moroccan culture.
“8 of us did a wonderful tour out to this historic site. It was extremely hot that day but Mohamed made sure we had shade here and there. We went to a Berber village and had the most delightful lunch. We were not expecting this and we were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food tasted. Our host for the meal wanted to show us an oasis and off we went to see that and that was very nice as well. We would recommend this tour highly. Believe it or not, we even got to see the goats up in the trees eating the leaves off the argon tree. We thought this was a joke when our guide showed us the trees on our way for the tour. Well, we did see it and all eight of us thoroughly enjoyed our guide and our time in Morocco.” - Reviewed on 2017-11-30
Discovering Artistic Heritage: Berber Carpets and Silverware
The rain-soaked streets of Taroudant lead you to another cultural gem, the Berber Carpets & Silverware Tour, available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This tour is a journey into the heart of Berber craftsmanship, where the intricate patterns of carpets and the gleam of silverware tell stories of a rich heritage. As you step into the workshops, the rhythmic sound of looms and the clinking of silver tools create a symphony of tradition.
The tour also takes you to the Tiout Oasis, a verdant haven amidst the arid landscape. Here, the rain breathes life into the palm groves, and the kasbah stands as a sentinel of history. The oasis offers a serene escape, where you can savor a traditional Moroccan lunch, the flavors enhanced by the cool, damp air. The journey through the oasis is a sensory delight, with the scent of wet earth and the sight of lush greenery providing a stark contrast to the city’s bustling streets.
“Really enjoyed Tiout Oasis - Fun trip, enjoyed Tiout Oasis, but we really didn’t see much of Taroudant. Pick up was straightforward and the driver was very good. We stopped en-route to Tiout Oasis for a quick bathroom break. We drove through the Tiout villages, getting a nice quick look before driving up to Tiout Kasbah for a great view over the oasis and villages, with the mountains in the distance. Here we met our guide, who was genuinely excellent. Knowledgeable and entertaining. Great English and French language skills. Next up we walked down the hill to where locals were waiting with donkeys. You could pay to ride the donkeys into the oasis, through a nice scenic area. You have the opportunity to have your photo taken (and to buy the photos). Donkey-ride over, we walked onwards through the oasis, seeing various fruits being grown and the irrigation system that has been built. There were multiple opportunities to buy souvenirs (haggling is advised) from small stalls - this was nice as there was zero pressure. At the end of this really nice and interesting walk through the oasis we were met by the driver and driven back up to the Tiout Kasbah for lunch. Lunch was really good, traditional Moroccan tagine - everyone doing the tour very much enjoyed it. The location was very nice as well. You could buy drinks. At this point it was 3pm, and we left for Taroudant. As it was already 3pm we knew there was zero chance that we were getting back by 5pm as we had expected. The Taroudant part of the tour very much an afterthought. We stopped briefly next to the city walls for a photo opportunity, you can find the location on google maps by searching for ‘Place 6 Novembre’. We quickly taken from here to the Souk and given a walking tour by the driver/guide through one local market and then a tourist market. The local market was interesting to those who hadn’t seen something similar before (it’s a market - everything you can imagine is on sale there). The tourist market was hell and the opposite of the souvenir opportunities in Tiout Oasis. Incredibly pushy salespeople who were such a pain that they actively put-off many in the group from evening looking at what they were selling. Very much what you expect from a market entirely targeted at tourists. I’m very much used to these situations, but many aren’t and the salespeople should realize they’d sell more if they chilled out a little. From here it was straight back to Agadir. We arrived back at our hotel a little after 7pm. Overall, my group really enjoyed Tiout Oasis, but thought Taroudant Souk was only OK. Everyone would have much preferred to have seen more of the city and walls. Markets are largely the same everywhere, seeing the city would have been far more interesting. We didn’t need to stop at the terrible tourist market. The driver and the guide were both excellent.” - Reviewed on 2025-01-17
