Wonderful Full Day Experience of North Africa's Tangier - What a wonderful experience as my Viator Trip Representative arranged to pick me up at my hotel, 7:00 AM, as we started a full day of exposure to the experience of Tangier. I was driven to the Ferry in Tarifa, Spain, which then takes you across the Mediterranean Ocean isthmus to North Arica and Tangier. There I was greeted by my guide, who grew up in the city and was knowledgeable of its history, the location of its important sights to visit and had contacts almost everywhere we went that helped enrich the experience. The tour starting with a drive up into the hills surrounding the port of Tangier, where we passed the King’s Palace and saw various sights of important and famous people who live in the area. Then an eye-popping view of the Mediterranean Ocean from the hill-top you would never find on you own. We then were off to a breakfast at a restaurant with an ocean view served the minute we can into the building. Wonderful, food served by the staff who knew our guide and gave me great service and a view to die for while I ate. Following breakfast, I was driven to the Atlantic Ocean side of the city where I by-passed the hour-long line to access Herculie’s Cave, a cave of Greek legends (In 6000 BC, the Caves of Hercules were inhabited by Neolithic people.) Another guide showed the sights of the cave and explained its history. From the cave to a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Ocean meeting spot, clearly showing the water line that forms from the different salt levels of the two bodies of water. Down to the beach, was a camel ride; have the experience of riding a camel across the sandy beach, walking in the surf with the ocean crashing waves behind you. Our guide got us to the camel ride location and insured there was no waiting to begin the ride. In full Lawrance of Arabia mode we rode from the surf, up a plateau above the ocean under camel power, where the ride ended. Lunch was multiple courses with great food choices and drinks for a full Moroccan experience. Live music was playing as there was a wedding party that afternoon, we just happened to hit. Following lunch, I was shown the markets of Tangier our guide had timed the arrival as the markets peak in the afternoon. Be prepared for a real experience. We walked through the fish market, with fishermen selling their catch of the day, the market was a real highlight, but just steps away was the other markets produces, meats, spices, flowers, baskets, rug, brass, you name it markets all bunched together in one dynamic location. You could easily get lost in the streets that wind up and down through this lovely town. Your guide shows you the way. At the end of the day my guide returned me to my ferry to Tarifa and back to my hotel. Tired but full of the experience of North Africa. A full day of seeing what the town had to offer with a guide who was always there to help and explain the sights, sounds and smells. You could never experience the city like this without the Tour. I was exhausted and pleased that I chose this tour. All I can say coming back was what a specular day. I have memories for a lifetime.
