Additional Information

Our exploration begins from Piazza Castello square, which is home to several major landmarks. We will take a look at the remains of the Doric Temple of Poseidon, built in the 6th century B.C., with two Doric pillars that stand as reminders of the ancient Magno-Greek temple. The journey continues with an exploration of the Aragonese castle which houses the Navy: initially erected by the Byzantines in the 11th century, it has grown over the centuries into its present shape.

In proximity to the castle, you will get to see and traverse the rotating bridge, Taranto’s emblem, which links the island of Borgo Antico with the Borgo Nuovo peninsula. Approximately 90 meters in length, it was unveiled in 1887 and overlooks a wide canal that is navigable, serving as a connector between two seas: the Mar Grande and the Mar Piccolo.

The excursion wraps up with a tour of the San Cataldo Cathedral, constructed by the Byzantines during the latter part of the tenth century, although it underwent remodeling with a Baroque frontage in the mid-1700s.
