Meeting Points: Starting Point Hotel, Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, or Ferry Port
Tangier - Upon arrival at Tangier’s airport or port, collect your luggage and step outside the terminal to find your driver-guide holding a sign with your name. You’ll then be driven to your hotel. After checking in, you might want to explore the area. Depending on your arrival time, visit the medina (old quarter) to wander through its maze of commercial and residential alleys, and admire the 15th-century Portuguese fortress. Enjoy a meal at a café in the trendy Zoco Chico square and indulge in some people-watching. Conclude your day with a late afternoon stroll along the bustling corniche to enjoy the sunset.
NOTE: The tour can be customized to fit your schedule, whether you prefer more or fewer days.
Discover Tangier & Caves of Hercules, ⇨ Continue to Chefchaouen
Tangier - Start your day early to explore more of Tangier. Consider hiring a guide to tour the kasbah (old fortification). Enter through the Bab Haha gate at the northeast end of Place du Mechouar and explore the medina’s Dar Baroud neighborhood.
Caves of Hercules - Just 20 minutes outside the city, at the northwestern tip of mainland Africa, lie the unique Caves of Hercules, named for their mythical connection to Hercules. Near the mid-19th-century Cape Spartel lighthouse, you can enter the cave complex through an opening that resembles the shape of Africa.
Chefchaouen - When ready, head to the blue-hued city of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains. Enjoy the scenic drive, stopping to hike (2-3 hours) to the Cascades d’Akchour (Akchour Waterfalls) if time permits. Chefchaouen is filled with winding, narrow streets and charming buildings. Visit Plaza Outa el Hammam for a meal at a restaurant or café while people-watching.
Though non-Muslims cannot enter, the Grand Mosque is worth a visit. Explore the nearby kasbah, tour the garden, museum, and some old prison cells. Follow a path outside the city walls to Hotel Atlas and climb to the rooftop for a panoramic view of the Blue City. For the more adventurous, follow the street east to cross the Ras el Ma Spring and ascend the path (20-30 minutes) to the abandoned white Spanish Mosque. Enjoy a final view over Chefchaouen as the sun sets behind the mountains.
Chefchaouen ⇨ Volubilis ⇨ Meknes ⇨ Fes
Volubilis - Rise early to explore the streets in peace, capturing unobstructed photos. Departing Chefchaouen, head toward Fes with an optional visit to UNESCO-protected Volubilis, Morocco’s best-preserved Roman ruins. Explore the vast complex, including large merchant homes with intact heating systems, temples, and colorful mosaics.
Meknes - Continue to Meknes, a smaller, less crowded version of Fes, for an optional detour and introduction to your first historic imperial city. Key attractions include the Ville Impériale (Imperial City) and the medina. In Ville Impériale, visit the Bab al-Mansour gate, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the Royal Stables. Outside the imperial city, explore the medina—a smaller, more navigable version compared to Fes and Marrakesh. Besides the scattered souks, consider visiting the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa and the Dar Jamaï Museum, a beautiful 19th-century palace-turned-museum.
Fes - Continue east to your second imperial city, Fes. Before exploring the medina, drive up the hill to visit the Merenid Tombs just north of the city and enjoy the panoramic view of historic Fes and its surroundings. Descend the hill and find your way to your riad (a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden), where you can savor a delicious meal and relax for the evening.
Fes ⇨ Sightseeing
Fes - Today, explore Fes, the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities. An expert guide will be arranged for a half-day tour to help you navigate the medina and learn more about the city. Begin in Fes el Bali (“Old Fes”). Founded in the eighth century, its roads are narrower, windier, and steeper than those of other imperial cities, making it almost inevitable to get lost at least a few times. Shop the iconic souks (markets) for a variety of goods (spices, leather, ceramics, pewter, etc).
Chouara Tannery - Visit Chouara Tannery, which still uses traditional techniques from centuries ago. Find a local leather shop for a rooftop view to watch the artisans at work. Visit one of the oldest still-operating universities in the world, Al-Qarawiyyin University (859 CE), next to the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. Though the mosque is only open to Muslims, there are a few spots where you can glimpse its decorated interior. From there, head to the 14th-century Al Attarine Madrasa or the Bou Inania Madrasa, beautiful examples of Moroccan architecture and craftsmanship showcasing intricate zellij tilework.
Bab Bou Jeloud - Enter through the famous Bab Boujeloud. The outside is blue (the traditional color for Fes), and the inside is green (the color for Islam). Proceed through the gate to the main thoroughfare of Talâa Kebira, filled with shops. Enjoy some retail therapy or visit the Musée Batha, home to many Moroccan arts—including carved wood and traditional pottery (its highlight)—and a beautiful central garden. Then visit 13th-century Fes el Jedid (“New Fes”) to discover the Batha Museum, housed in a 19th-century palace. Spend time in the Andalusian-style gardens before walking to the Mellah (old Jewish quarter and cemetery).
Fes ⇨ Ifran ⇨ Cedar Forest ⇨ Midelt ⇨ Ziz Valley ⇨ Sahara Desert
Azrou - Start early today, as you’ll cover a lot of ground. From Fes, travel south toward Merzouga to reach the Sahara dunes for a sunset camel ride. Along the way, pass through the town of Azrou and ascend to an elevation of 7,146 feet (2,178 m) over the Col du Zad pass and through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas mountains. Here, enjoy sightings of local Barbary monkeys before stopping for lunch in Midelt (the “apple city”).
Erfoud - Continue over the Tizi n’Talremt pass into the Ziz Valley, known for its hidden oases and palm tree clusters. Along the road, you’ll see many fortified houses known as ksars—built by merchants to protect valuable goods, including gold, salt, and spices.
Continue to Erfoud, a bustling market town known for its date festival and famous for its fossil mining and artisan factories. En route, observe hillside mines where large rocks are extracted. In town, visit a local artisan collective to learn about the types of fossils found in the area and see the full process of transforming fossil-rich rock into beautiful objects. Soon, you’ll see the sand waves of Erg Chebbi, an extensive sea of dunes covering 13.5 square miles (35 sq km). The massive dunes shift and travel with the changing wind.
Erg Chebbi - Near Merzouga, take a short break and switch to a camel ride through the dunes to your pre-arranged camp, arriving just before sunset. Climb a nearby sand dune to watch the sunset before returning to camp for a delicious dinner and relaxing by the campfire. Enjoy an evening of Berber music followed by a night in a bedouin-style tent under a vast night sky filled with twinkling stars. If you prefer modern comfort, you can opt to spend the night at a comfortable hotel/auberge in Merzouga.
Tour of The Dunes ⇨ Visit Nomad Families ⇨ Merzouga Desert
Erg Chebbi Dunes - Rise early to witness a spectacular desert sunrise, then spend the morning exploring more of the Sahara. Rent a sandboard to test your skills on the dunes, take the Erg Chebbi tour (around the dunes), join a quad ATV tour, or relax by a pool.
Merzouga ⇨ Rissani ⇨ Arfoud ⇨ Todra Gorges ⇨ Dades Valley
Rissani Market - Depart the Merzouga region and dunes, stopping in the market town of Rissani, entering through its impressive gate. Known for its livestock auction, it’s worth visiting the “donkey parking lot” to delight your senses and explore its traditional market.
Boumalne Dades - Continue to Dades Valley, passing through villages like Millab, Tinjdad, and Toroug to reach Todra Valley, a green area surrounded by mud villages and mountains. After a 30-minute drive, arrive at Todra gorges: a narrow vertical passage with 300m high cliffs rising dramatically on each side, popular with climbing enthusiasts. Enjoy lunch in town, then continue to Dades Valley, where you’ll see the fascinating rock formation known locally as “monkies fingers” and beautiful mud Kasbahs. Overnight in a hotel overlooking the valley.
Dades Valley ⇨ Rose Town ⇨ Ouarzazate ⇨ Ait Benhaddou ⇨ Marrakech
Ouarzazate - Today, enter the growing town of Ouarzazate, a common stop along desert routes, offering more accessibility than nearby smaller towns like Aït Benhaddou. The town gained popularity due to the movie industry, and you can tour one of two movie studios for an up-close look at props and sets. Popular film credits include “Black Hawk Down,” “Prometheus,” “American Sniper,” and “Game of Thrones.” To learn more about the area’s history and filmmaking process, visit the Musée du Cinema.
Ait Ben Haddou - Next, reach medieval Aït Benhaddou, Morocco’s most famous kasbah and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old ksour dates back to the 11th century when it was an important stop along the trans-Saharan trade route between Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, and the southern desert. Enjoy free time to explore and have lunch in the village. Afterward, head to Marrakesh via the High Atlas Mountains (2260 m), admiring the impressive mountainous views and unique Berber villages on the mountainsides. Arrive in Marrakesh in the evening.
Marrakech - After a long day on the road, settle into your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon at your leisure. In the early evening, Jemaa el-Fna square comes alive with musicians, performers, snake charmers, games, and food stalls, offering a variety of entertainment. For a more relaxed experience, choose one of the many cafés surrounding the square to enjoy a cup of mint tea and a savory meal.
Marrakesh ⇨ Sightseeing
Marrakesh - After breakfast, meet your local guide who will lead you through the old city of Marrakech. As you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll encounter lively souks and maze-like alleys. Be dazzled by displays of djellabas, brightly colored babouches, intricately pierced lanterns, conical mounds of exotic spices, and the vibrant medina life.
Along the way, your knowledgeable and energetic guide will share the history and stories of the Medina, the Souk, and the Mellah neighborhoods of the Red City.
Jardin Majorelle - In the afternoon, continue your private tour, exploring places like the Bahia and El Badii Palaces, and the Saadian Tombs. You’ll also visit the Majorelle Gardens, an iconic garden retreat built over forty years by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later inhabited by famed designer Yves Saint Laurent.
Marrakech ⇨ Transfer to Airport
Marrakesh Menara Airport - Depending on your departure details, you may wish to visit any remaining attractions or complete last-minute gift and souvenir shopping.
It’s time to bid farewell to Morocco. Your driver will ensure you arrive at the airport of your choice with ample time before your flight. Have a safe and pleasant journey home or to your next destination!
