The Amboni caves are steeped in captivating folklore about a divine presence residing within, where traditional rituals persist to this day. Indigenous tribes such as the Segeju, Sambaa, Bondei, and Digo, who lived nearby, often turned to the caves as a place of prayer. Some chambers within are treated as hallowed spaces for the worship of certain spirits, including one known as ‘Mzimu wa Mabuvu’. Many believe that these divine entities have the power to ease their ailments, alleviate their suffering, or boost their fertility.
These caves also served as the dwelling of Osale Otanga, a figure notorious for causing trouble for colonialists. Rich in history, one of the caverns is reputed to have hidden a duo of pre-independence folk heroes during the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s.
Today, the caves draw not only tourists but also geography students for their studies.
