A Must for Liquor Enthusiasts - This was an excellent evening activity in Tamarindo! Our bartender hostess was extremely knowledgeable not only on the spirits themselves, but also on the brewing process and history. We followed a track of four spirits she had both of us try, then picked out a unique fifth for each of us to try according to our tastes.

Must Do Experience! Worth it! - This is a must do excursion. Our bartender was extremely knowledgeable about the agave spirits available and engaged with us on what we were tasting. It opened us to what is possible with agave spirits. Would recommend having eaten something prior to the tour because you are tasting a variety of alcohol (4-5 different items).

Not a tequila drinker but enjoyed! - Liz and her crew of Shaina (Canada) and David (Italy) were very passionate about mezcal, tequila and the Costa Rican 🇨🇷 culture.
Nested above the local favorite Nogui’s, it’s a hidden chill and friendly bar on the second floor with amazing view of beach and sunset with great knowledgeable cocktail options.
The tasting experience was led by David with us and not Liz, who’s the expert of the group.
David was very passionate and knowledgeable on agave, tequila, mezcal and the processes. His English was impressive given that it is his 3rd language to his Italian and Spanish.
We tried and were blown away by how many varieties exist and got some good tips on mixing/drinking mezcal/tequila.
Despite not being a big tequila/mezcal guy, I appreciated the experience and recommend you try it’s

A Tequila, Mescal, and Agave Spirit Safari! - Located in the upper level of oldest business building in all of Tamarindo (Standing since the main road was dirt, no power or running water was existent) is CATA. At CATA Liz took us on a tequila, mescal and agave spirit tasting “safari”.
Situated in a cozy air conditioned tasting room in the corner of the upper level is where the exploration commences and you learn the basics of agave harvesting. My family peppered Liz with questions for the entirety of the tasting to which she answered all happily and with no hesitation.
We tasted a variety of artisanal spirits some of which a bottle may go for $300-$900 if you were to attempt to acquire on your own (this was determined upon our post-tasting research). Luckily, CATA does not take any of this secondary market mumbo jumbo into account; With their boots on the ground approach of going on a yearly sourcing expedition they ensure that only the highest quality and traditionally made agave spirits end up in their tasting room.
I would highly recommend taking the opportunity to engage in a tasting at CATA even if you are not a tequila, mescal, and agave spirit connoisseur!
