- Hungarian Open Air Museum (Szabadteri Neprajzi Muzeum) - Our first stop will be Szentendre, where you can visit Hungary’s largest open-air village museum (optional). Explore over 350 traditional buildings from various regions, showcasing Hungarian rural life from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. Wander through life-sized exhibits depicting farming practices, folk crafts, and regional architecture, offering a fascinating glimpse into Hungary’s rich cultural heritage. (Closed on Mondays)
- Szentendre - Szentendre, Hungary is a captivating town with a rich blend of cultures reflected in its cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and vibrant art scene. Founded by Serbs in the 17th century, it boasts a unique Serbian Orthodox quarter, charming museums, and a delightful Danube River promenade, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike.
- Visegrad - Visegrád Castle in Hungary is a history buff’s/nature lover’s dream. Combining an impressive 13th-century citadel with stunning Danube views, this stop is a great opportunity to explore Hungary’s royal past and take amazing photos of the Danube Bend. You can even see a wax figure exhibit of the famous 1335 meeting of three kings.
(Please note that between December 1 - December 23, and January 8 - February 28, the castle is only open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, and is closed on December 24 and 25)
- Esztergom - Towering over Esztergom, Hungary, the Esztergom Basilica (optional) is a sight to behold. As the largest church in the country, it boasts a grand neoclassical design, a massive dome visible for kilometers, and a rich history. Built on the site of earlier churches dating back to King Stephen I, it’s the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary and offers stunning views and a deep connection to Hungarian history.
- Nagymaros - We will return to Budapest on the other side of the Danube, first through Slovakia, then crossing beautiful villages of Swabian German origin. We will stop in Nagymaros, from where you can have a stunning view of the Visegrád Castle and the Danube Bend - a scenic spot very few tour operators do.
- Veroce - As our last stop of the day, we will stop for coffee/ice cream in Verőce, a charming village located on the banks of the Danube River, where you can view an interesting riverside system of retaining walls, first started based on the plans of famous Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. It’s a unique sight in the Hungarian part of the Danube, and again something very few tour operators do, despite its obvious charm.

Let me take you on an unforgettable day trip to my native Danube Bend, one of the most beautiful areas of Hungary, in my comfy and safe Mitsubishi Outlander 4WD. This tour is special, as after visiting the “conventional” Szentendre, Visegrád & Esztergom trio (the latter being optional), we’ll return to Budapest on the other side of the Danube, something which very few tour guides do, despite the breathtaking views and the charming, historical villages awaiting you on that side too. If you decide to do the Esztergom leg (+1 hour drive, no extra cost), we’ll cross over to Slovakia from there and return through Nagymaros/Verőce on the other side. If you opt to spend more time in Szentendre/Visegrád instead, and make the day more leisurely, from Visegrád we’ll take a ferry to Nagymaros (an experience in itself), and return to Budapest through Verőce. The first stop, the village museum is also optional, and I’ll be flexible with timing/stops/eating as you wish.
- Total time spent at the attractions is about 7 hours - 7 hours 30 minutes, if you decide to do all of them, inluding the Open Air Museum and Esztergom. Transport time is an extra 90-120 minutes, depending on your customization.
