The Owia Salt Pond is an exceptional, stunning ocean-fed pool found at the uppermost point of St Vincent’s windward side. It’s surrounded by formations of Volcanic rock, while reef fish and corals bring splashes of colour and liveliness to the pool. A tranquil garden overlooks the pond, housing gazebos, refreshments, and a play area for children. The garden is linked to the pool via roughly 217 steps. One of the park’s key features is its coastal forest, which safeguards the steep inclines leading from the pond to the park.
This passage, spanning approximately 300 feet, connects Grand Sable and Byrea Bay. Around 1815, the British created this tunnel with slave labour as a transport conduit for sugar exports. After wrapping up the Second Carib War in 1796, the areas north of Byrea were handed over to British settlers for sugar cane farming. For its era, the tunnel was a marvel of engineering prowess.
