Highlights
  • Skaftafell Terminal - Tour Center - After a short ride on the famous “Tröll Bus”, you’ll immerse yourself in the glacier and begin a short hike to the ice cap. Once there, your guide will explain how to get geared up and what the safest practices to walk on a glacial surface. Once you have your crampons and all necessary equipment on it’s time to take to the ice and begin the adventure.

As you get into the glacier outlet, the majestic features of the natural world amaze you. Falljökull is a glacial tongue from Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. The icefall in the area is unique on earth and the further you get, the more it will blow your mind. The out-worldly scenery is comprised the ice formations in the area: deep crevasses, pale moulins, and even ice sculptures.

The further we continue exploring, the more the beautiful it gets. Since we’re going to be so high up, we will be able to observe panoramas over Skaftafell National Park, that has gained fame in the last years for being the location for many films and shows. During your expedition, your glacier guide will let you know how glaciers are formed and what are the dangers. You will also learn about the consequences of global warming and their future.

Great glacier hike - This was a well run and well organized tour. I'd suggest you take the 5 hour not the 3 hour tour if you have time as you will see much more of the more interesting/higher up parts of the glacier. As this (like all other) glaciers have receded, it takes ~ 45 minutes to an hour just to get onto the ice. The bus ride drops you off about a mile (estimated) from the start of the glacier and you walk/hike that part prior to gearing up with crampons, etc. Same deal on the back end. (FYI - there were some smaller vans/tour guides that seemed to park much closer to the actual glacier than where the Troll bus drops you off - if you are time constrained maybe research those). The glacier hike itself is a pretty good hike/climb. I didn't have my tracker on, but you should be in somewhat decent hiking shape to do this. If you are a hiker and use All Trails and can do 4-5 mile moderate to easy hard trails, then you'll be fine. This isn't a walk in the park however. Every day on the glacier is different due to the continuing movement/melting. The guide was having to find "today's" best path up, which makes this an interesting adventure.

Skaftafell Glacier Hike - This tour was fantastic, 10/10 would do it again. It's incredible to be on the glacier and the views were amazing. We got to rappel down a crevasse and explore different areas of the glacier. We always felt safe and the pace was good. General FYI---the temperature on the glacier is about the same as on the ground, so dress accordingly before putting the gear on

Top-notch ice hike - Family activity. We were taken care of by Katerina our great guide who gave us a wonderful experience. We spent a real visit on the glacier for almost 3 hours. I recommend Troll Expeditions for all activities (we also did Snorkeling Silfra with Lou our great French-speaking guide). Troll expeditions was a perfect contact for organizing our activities and very responsive to all our requests by phone or email. Many thanks for these wonderful moments.

Great views- Great hike- NIIICE - This was an amazing experience. Augustine was our guide and he was perfect! He was patient and explained everything that we needed to do. I would suggest eating a good breakfast before you go, and pack some snacks and water. You have to have ankle covering hiking boots or you will have to use theirs. If you aren’t in good shape, you may struggle. It was moderate for us and we hike/work out regularly.

Wonderful views and experiences, helpful and friendly guides. - When we got to the meeting point we were asked to join a larger and longer tour than booked as there were insufficient guides. We felt pressured to make a decision on this quickly, whereas we needed a little time to work out if the logistics would work for the rest of the day. We were not the only group to have a different experience to the one booked. Our guide, Magdalena, did her best to resolve the problems with the booking and we agreed to the altered tour. Once we were up on the glacier itself, we had an absolutely fantastic time. The views are stunning and Magdalena took great care to make sure everyone was safe and got to experience the incredible sights the glacier has to offer.
