Setting Sail on the Roseau River

As someone who has spent countless hours riding the waves and exploring the Caribbean’s vibrant shores, I was eager to try something a little different—bamboo rafting on St. Lucia’s Roseau River. The idea of gliding through lush rainforests and tropical landscapes on a bamboo raft, or as they call it, an “Island Gondola,” was too enticing to pass up.

The day began with a friendly greeting from Stephen, our guide for the day. He picked us up at the port and kept us entertained with stories and insights about St. Lucia as we made our way to the river. Despite a slight delay due to the popularity of the activity, Stephen’s engaging personality made the journey enjoyable. We even stopped at a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking panorama of the port below—a perfect teaser for the adventure that awaited us.

A Drift Through Nature’s Tranquility

Upon arriving at the rafting location, we had a brief wait for the rafts to return from the previous group. The anticipation only added to the excitement, and the shaded benches provided a comfortable spot to relax. Once the rafts were ready, we donned our life vests and set off on our journey down the river.

The experience was nothing short of magical. As we gently drifted downstream, our guide pointed out various points of interest, sharing tidbits about the local flora and fauna. A Birthday to Remember

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the little bar on the beach, where we were greeted by Clive, the charismatic bartender. It happened to be my birthday, and Clive’s warm welcome made the day even more special. He even did a little dance with my partner, and we captured the moment with some photos. The rum punch from Clive’s bar was the best I’d tasted during my entire stay in St. Lucia—a perfect blend of flavors that embodied the island’s spirit.

As the day came to a close, we boarded a series of rafts tied together for the return journey upstream. The ride back was a bit tricky, with some muddy puddles to navigate, but it only added to the adventure. Stephen drove us back to the port, sharing more of his knowledge and leaving us with a deeper appreciation for St. Lucia’s rich culture and history.
