Highlights
  • Prince Murat House - Both Prince Achille Murat (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte), and American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson stayed here in the 1820’s to fight a bout of illness. This 1790 coquina house is a great example of Second Spanish period architecture.
  • Aviles Street - Extending south from the Plaza to Bridge Street, Aviles Street is one of the narrow, brick lined, historic streets of the city which has retained much of its colonial character.
  • St. George Street - Starting at the Old City Gates and extending to historic Lincolnville, St. George Street is the center of shopping, entertainment, historical sites, attractions, and restaurants.
  • Father Miguel O’Reilly House Museum - With parts of the structure dating back to 1691, the O’Reilly House is St. Augustine’s oldest standing home. Father Michael O’Reilly moved into the house in 1785 and was a leading figure in the construction of the Cathedral. Upon his death in 1812, he willed the house to Catholic Church. It is now operated as a museum by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
  • Plaza de la Constitucion - The plaza has been a central part of St. Augustine since 1573 when it was first laid out by the Spanish Royal Ordinances.
  • Treasury Street - The narrowest street in the city! Built only 7 feet wide to make it almost impossible to steal gold being transported from the ships to the Royal Spanish Treasury.
  • Castillo de San Marcos National Monument - The oldest and largest masonry fort in the continental United States. Finished in 1695 and survived 2 British attacks. It is not part of the National Park Service.

Great Guide, Great Beer, Great History Tour - Alex is a great guide!! My husband and I booked the Ale Trail for July (crazy, huh?!?) but it was fantastic! We hopped from bar to bar and sampled delicious, cold beer and had a yummy snack/appetizer, too. It didn't seem too hot and Alex kept us entertained & informed on the walking tour and while sampling the beverages. We will definitely book another tour with St Augustine Experiences!

How history tours should be done - Like beer? Like history? Then this one is for you. This is how history tours should be done. Steve is a great guy who really knew his stuff. You start out in a brewery to get things started (probably the best way to start any activity) and then wander the streets learning about the fascinating history of the city, with a few more stops for a top-up! Feel free to ask the hard history questions as well, Steve will definitely know answer.

Beer and History Great Combo - Steve was awesome! Small group so was very informal. Great history of St Augustine. Unexpected finds. And then the beer of course! Tried many different styles that we would not normally have. All were delicious. Thanks Steve
