The protected inner waters of estuaries, rich in sediment, create some of the most fertile coastal environments. Their productivity surpasses that of even the best agricultural land or the open ocean.
80% of the Fraser Estuary has been lost, altered, or developed. Similarly, 50% of the Squamish estuary has been lost, altered, or developed. Estuaries are a rare resource, comprising less than 3% of BC’s coastline.
