Highlights
  • The Golden Gate - We will gather at the Golden Gate, the northern entrance of Diocletian’s Palace, a renowned landmark in Split. Despite its name, the gate is made of stone, not gold. It is located opposite another famous monument, the statue of Gregory of Nin. Here, you will learn about the history of Split and the significance of the Golden Gate.
  • Grgur Ninski Statue - Discover the intriguing story and historical facts about Gregory of Nin. You will also learn about the tallest monument in Split dedicated to him and the sculptor who created it.
  • Palazzo di Diocleziano - Diocletian’s Palace, the central monument of the old city, was built by one of the Roman Empire’s most successful emperors. It is one of the best-preserved monuments of its kind. Here, you will hear the story of Emperor Diocletian and explore the most important parts and hidden gems of his palace. You will also learn about the palace’s transition into a medieval city with its unique characteristics.

Starting at the Golden Gate, you will explore key parts of Diocletian’s Palace, including the Peristyle, Jupiter’s Temple (exterior), Diocletian’s Cellars (Central Substructure), Triclinium, and the Mausoleum (Cathedral; exterior).

  • The Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace - Standing in the center of Diocletian’s Palace, the Peristyle, you will learn about its function and significance. As the palace’s central spot, the Peristyle connected and divided people from the Emperor. From here, you can get a great view and understand how life in the palace functioned. You will also hear about the buildings’ transitions and life changes due to the spread of Christianity. From the Peristyle, we will enter the central part of Diocletian’s Cellars, where I will explain their historical usage and importance to Split. We will also visit the Triclinium, where you will learn about the dining habits of the Emperors and Romans and the organization of the Emperor’s dining room.
  • Temple of Jupiter - Religion was highly significant in the Roman Empire, and temples to honor gods were essential in Roman residences. You will learn about this and the specific details of Jupiter’s Temple while viewing it from the outside.
  • Cathedral of Saint Domnius - During our exterior visit to the Cathedral of St. Domnius, I will highlight its significant parts and share the story behind it. I will also point out interesting interior features in case you decide to visit it on your own after the tour.
  • Vestibulum of Diocletian’s Palace - The Vestibulum, or entrance to Diocletian’s private chambers, was decorated to reflect its importance. You will learn about its appearance and function.
  • Riva Harbor - Riva is the main city promenade. I will explain how Riva was developed over the centuries and its importance to the locals as the city’s central gathering place.
  • Fruit’s Square (Trg Brace Radic) - Discover why this charming square is called Fruit Square. You will learn about the significant monument in its center and other important sights surrounding the square.
  • Pjaca - People’s Square, or Pjaca (Piazza), has been the center of city events from medieval times to the present. Each square has its own story, and while standing here, I will share the tale of this beautiful, soulful square and its surrounding buildings, such as the old City Hall.

Fascinating ramble through the Palace - We really enjoyed our experience walking around the old town of Split. Boris was a kind, interesting and thoughtful guide. I am a history buff and my partner is someone who refers to "rubble" for archaeology. Nonetheless, he pitched the talk really well to entertain both of us. My partner couldn't walk very well after a fall so Boris always made sure she could find a place to sit for parts of the tour. All in all, a very worthwhile tour and we have no hesitation in recommending any tour by Boris.

Brilliant!!! The best tour we did!!! - We were recommended to take this tour at Croatian Tourist Office and we definitely didn`t regret! Walking tour is focused on Ancient and Medieval history of the Split but because we were so interested our guide, Boris, brilliant young person with great knowledge about various subjects and not just about the history, gave us great lesson about the more recent events in Croatian history. As a local guy he explained us also problems and concerns of the local community as well as some interesting controversies of the Croatian society in general. This was the best thing which we did on our vacation and Boris was the best guide which we ever had!! We did a lot of tours but this one, as we all agreed, was the best we did! Boris was very knowledgeable, fluent in English, friendly and patient with all of our questions which we had! Just amazing and we definitely recommend this to everyone who wants to know more about the Croatia and this part of the world in every possible sense! Thank you so much for everything Boris! We can`t wait to come back to Split and do this again with our friends as well! Griffith Family

See Split with the best - We cannot speak highly enough of Boris. We booked a day tour of Split for our family of 5 (including 3 teenagers) and he managed to keep each one of us engaged and entertained! He is a true professional, articulate, with an immense knowledge of Split and it's history. He is a great communicator with a fantastic sense of humour. Definitely the best guide we've ever had (and not just in Croatia). If you are thinking of visiting Split and using a tiur guide, look no further than Pomalo Tours (Boris) Keep up the great work Boris. Robert & Diana

Best private tour we did! More than a tour!! - We took the private tour with Boris because we wanted to know more about the history of the city and we wanted to do that "one on one" because we had a lot of questions considering we are great history lovers. It was a great decision and Boris was a perfect choice. He explained us historical development of the city from beginning to the end in a very smooth way so we were able to understand it very easily. We were also interested in other things beside the history and architecture such as social development, politics, economy and we were surprised how well Boris was versed in all. His knowledge and understanding of the broader themes and area gave us great opportunity to find out much more than we were expecting from the tour. Boris went above and beyond in every possible way to share all of his knowledge with us and as we even exceeded the tour duration he stayed with us which we consider very kind of him. During all the tour we felt very comfortable as we felt we are with our friend and not only a person who we saw for the first time in our life! We can`t recommend Boris enough, great guide, teacher and person. Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is doing. Also, we recommend to do the private tour with him because you will have him "all for yourself", which is, talking about him, great experience!
