Highlights
  • Walter Sisulu Square - A key site where visitors can learn about the Freedom Charter, signed in 1955 by the Congress of the People for a future democratic South Africa. The square, also known as Freedom Square, is famous for its lively atmosphere and daily fruit and vegetable market.
  • Orlando Towers - Known as Power Park, the Orlando Towers are the tallest landmarks in Soweto, featuring large murals that advertise corporate businesses and depict daily life in Soweto. The towers also offer extreme sports like bungee jumping and free fall.
  • Orlando East - A historic area of Soweto that still has the original brick homes, known as matchbox houses. Orlando East is also famous for its rich soccer heritage, being home to the Orlando Pirates, the largest soccer club in Soweto.
  • Hector Pieterson Memorial - Learn about the Soweto Uprising, a student protest in 1976 against the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction. This protest is considered the beginning of the end of the Apartheid system, as it led to international sanctions against South Africa.
  • Vilakazi Street - The only street in the world with two Nobel Peace Prize winners: the homes of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Vilakazi Street is 1 km long and features numerous restaurants, an art and craft market, musicians, and traditional dancers, making it a perfect spot for refreshments or local shopping.
  • Soweto Brewing Company - Experience the local Soweto beer and enjoy a special tour of the brewery.
  • 58 Beacon Rd - Visit a local community project in Kliptown called The Shalk, which provides daycare and afternoon programs for young people and kids. Visitors can interact with the children and learn about the positive work being done by community members.
  • Mandela House - Mandela House and Vilakazi Street are iconic landmarks in South African history. Immerse yourself in the memory of one of South Africa’s most important struggle journeys.
