• Grandstaff Canyon Trail - Up ahead is the Grandstaff Canyon Trail. This moderately challenging hike spans approximately 5 miles and takes nearly an hour to complete. If time permits, it’s well worth the effort, as it culminates at a stunning natural bridge over 200 feet in length.

• Take Out Beach - Approaching soon is Take Out Beach. As we near, you may spot paddle rafts, tubes, and kayaks drifting down the river. This section of the Colorado River is the most floated in Utah! If you have a boat or flotation device, it’s an excellent spot to take it for a ride.
• Petrified Sand Dunes - The red stone forming the walls of most formations here is known as Wingate Sandstone. Interestingly, this rock was once sand.

Here’s the story: 200 million years ago, winds from the northwest transported vast amounts of fine-grained sand here. The sand spread out, forming dunes and settling into a shallow sea. The wind continually reshaped the sand, eventually layering other sediments on top. Water also carried rocks and minerals, depositing them over the sand.

• Hauer Ranch (Moab Horses) - An optional detour to Hauer Ranch is coming up. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the ranch, where you can explore famous filming sites and even ride a horse!

• Parriott Mesa - To our left is a massive sandstone mesa, hard to miss. That’s Parriott Mesa, extending over a mile. Although long, it’s quite narrow, measuring only 350 feet at its narrowest point. Geologically, this makes it closer to a butte than a mesa.

• Castle Valley - The burst of green ahead indicates we’re nearing Castle Valley. Its lush greenery is nourished by water flowing from the surrounding rocks, but the valley’s origin is actually salt!

• Castleton Tower - To our left is a summit resembling a giant thumb. That’s Castleton Tower, the first major tower climbed by Americans in the area.

• Round Mountain - Ahead on our right is a squat gray mountain, Round Mountain. The name might not be creative, but its composition is unique—it’s made of lava! The story began 24 million years ago when magma struggled to surface, creating laccolithic mountains. The magma did escape in a few places, like here at Round Mountain, but didn’t travel far.

• La Sal Lookout Point - Approaching La Sal Lookout Point, which offers a breathtaking view of the mesas and buttes along the Colorado River. From here, certain rock formations are more visible than from the road. Look out for the Courthouse Towers, two towering stone columns named after New York City skyscrapers, not a courthouse.

• Warner Lake - An optional detour to Warner Lake is coming up, a secluded lake just five miles off our path. If you’re up for a quick swim or some fishing, it’s a great detour, only a 20-minute drive from here.

• Oowah Lake - A detour for Oowah Lake is just 15 minutes away. If you enjoy a rewarding hike, lace up your boots for the Oowah Lake to Clarks Lake Trail, offering scenic views of the Canyonlands region below. Like Warner Lake, it’s stocked with rainbow trout, providing excellent fishing opportunities.

• Geyser Pass Road - To our left are three mountains. The leftmost is Mount Mellenthin at 12,645 feet. In the center is Mount Peale, the highest peak at 12,726 feet. To the right is Mount Tukuhnikivatz, at 12,482 feet. These are the tallest peaks of the La Sal Mountains. While we’re admiring the mountains, some adventurers have skied them! But how do they get there?

• Ken’s Lake - Coming up is the turn for Ken’s Lake and Faux Falls. But what is a faux waterfall? Can a waterfall be fake? Faux Falls is real, created by humans diverting water from the nearby lake. It’s definitely worth seeing! There’s also a swimming hole at the waterfall’s base, though it’s only three feet deep, more like a wading pool.
