Petrified Sand Dunes - The red stone forming the walls of many of these structures is known as Wingate Sandstone. Interestingly, this rock was once sand!

- Petrified Sand Dunes - The red stone forming the walls of many of these structures is known as Wingate Sandstone. Interestingly, this rock was once sand!
Here’s the story: 200 million years ago, winds from the northwest transported vast amounts of fine-grained sand to this area. The sand spread out, forming dunes and settling into the shallow sea. The wind continuously reshaped the sand, eventually layering other sediments on top. Water also played a role, carrying rocks and minerals and depositing them over the sand.
- Take Out Beach - Coming up soon is Take Out Beach. As we approach, you might spot a few paddle rafts, tubes, and kayaks floating down the river. This section of the Colorado River is the most floated in Utah! If you have a boat or flotation device, this is an excellent spot to enjoy it.
- Grandstaff Canyon Trail - Ahead is the Grandstaff Canyon Trail. This moderate hike spans about 5 miles and takes nearly an hour to complete. If you have the time, it’s well worth it — the trail ends at an impressive natural bridge over 200 feet long.
Note: The tour covers over 61 miles, with more than 45 audio stories, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete.
Purchase once, use for a year! Perfect for extended visits and return trips over the next 12 months.
-
Hauer Ranch (Moab Horses) - We’re approaching an optional detour to Hauer Ranch. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the ranch, where you can see some famous filming sites and even ride a horse!
-
Parriott Mesa - To our left, you’ll see a massive sandstone mesa – it’s hard to miss. That’s Parriott Mesa, stretching over a mile. While it’s a long mesa, it’s also quite narrow. At its narrowest point, it measures only 350 feet. Geologically, this makes it closer to a butte than a mesa.
-
Castle Valley - The burst of green ahead indicates we’re nearing Castle Valley. Its lush greenery comes from water flowing down from the surrounding rocks, but the valley’s origin is actually salt!
-
Castleton Tower - To our left is a summit with a feature resembling a giant thumb. Do you see it? That’s Castleton Tower, the first major tower climbed by Americans in the area.
-
Round Mountain - Notice the squat gray mountain ahead on our right? That’s Round Mountain. Quite a creative name, right? Wondering why it’s not red like the surrounding formations? It’s because it’s made of LAVA! The story began 24 million years ago when magma struggled to bubble up from the earth, creating laccolithic mountains. The magma did escape in a few places, like here at Round Mountain, but it didn’t travel far.
-
La Sal Lookout Point - We’re nearing La Sal Lookout Point, offering a stunning view of the mesas and buttes alongside the Colorado River. From this viewpoint, we’ll see certain rock formations more clearly than from the road. One to watch for is the Courthouse Towers, two towering stone columns. They’re not named after a courthouse but after skyscrapers in New York City.
-
Warner Lake - We’re approaching an optional detour to Warner Lake, a secluded little lake just five miles off our path. If you’re up for a quick swim or some fishing, this is a great detour, only a 20-minute drive from here.
-
Oowah Lake - Coming up is a detour for Oowah Lake, just a 15-minute drive from here. If you enjoy a good hike with a spectacular payoff, lace up your boots because the Oowah Lake to Clarks Lake Trail offers scenic vistas of the Canyonlands region below. Like Warner Lake, this lake is stocked with rainbow trout, so there’s excellent fishing here too.
-
Ken’s Lake - Coming up shortly is the turn for Ken’s Lake and Faux Falls. But what is a faux waterfall? Can a waterfall be fake? In reality, Faux Falls is genuine; it’s just man-made by diverting water from the nearby lake. It’s definitely worth seeing! There’s also a swimming hole at the base of the waterfall, though it’s only three feet deep, so it’s more like a wading pool.
-
Geyser Pass Road - To our left stand a trio of mountains. The leftmost is Mount Mellenthin at 12,645 feet. In the center is Mount Peale, the highest peak at 12,726 feet. To the right is Mount Tukuhnikivatz, at 12,482 feet. These are the tallest peaks of the La Sal Mountains. While we’re just admiring the mountains, some adventurers have skied them! But how do they get there?
