• Casa dell’Albergo - This Roman-era house, buried during Vesuvius’s 79 A.D. eruption, was uncovered during Herculaneum’s archaeological excavations. Situated on a hill’s edge, it offers a panoramic view and spans 2,150 square meters, making it the largest house discovered in Herculaneum. It uniquely features a spa district, initially leading to its identification as a hotel.

• Sacellum of Augustali - Constructed near the forum during Emperor Augustus’s reign, this quadrangular building houses exquisite frescoes depicting Hercules entering Olympus with Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, and Hercules battling Achelous. The janitor’s skeleton was discovered in his room, resting on the bed.

• Casa dei Cervi - This opulent house with a sea-view terrace belonged to Q. Granius Verus, a freed slave shortly before Herculaneum’s destruction. The garden features two statues of deer attacked by dogs, giving the house its name.

• Casa del Salone Nero - Named for its black-painted party hall with geometric designs, this house contained wax tablets of L. Venidius Ennychus, believed to be the owner. The tablets discuss her Augustale eligibility, a slave purchase, and a daughter’s birth.

• Casa dello Scheletro - Likely formed from three smaller buildings, this house’s name comes from human remains found in a second-floor room in 1831.

• Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite - The vitreous mosaics, costly at the time, are truly charming, featuring floral and hunting scenes, with a central mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite, the sea deity and her companion.

The ancient Roman city of Herculaneum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the slopes of Vesuvius. Smaller but no less important, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius 79 d.c. Naturally a prominent place was reserved for the mythical Hercules, the hero who according to tradition had founded the city of Herculaneum.
