- Chennakesava Temple, Somanathapura - The Keshava temple at Somanthapur has recently been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This remarkable temple was constructed in the 13th century during the Hoysala dynasty’s rule. It ranks among the top three temples out of the 92 built by the Hoysalas. The temple is set on a star-shaped platform adorned with high-quality sculptures. Notable features include the highly symmetrical and geometric lathe-turned pillars, 16 unique ceilings each featuring a banana flower motif, exquisite statues of Venugopala and Janardhana in two of the three sanctum sanctorums, intricately detailed vimanas, 480 distinct elephant carvings at the base, and a multitude of gods and goddesses. Approximately 500 artists took 40 years to complete this temple, which was later damaged by the invading Mughals in the 14th century. Although it is no longer used for rituals, it remains a testament to artistic excellence.
- Mysuru Palace - The Mysore Palace is the most opulent and luxurious palace in South India, often referred to as the “Palace of Versailles” of India. Constructed in 1912 in the Indo-Saracenic style, the palace’s chief architect was Henry Irwin, an Englishman. The palace’s grandeur is highlighted by tiles from England, marble from Italy, chandeliers from Czechoslovakia, cast iron pillars and stained glass from Scotland, teak wood from Burma, and jaguar bronze statues from England. Situated on 45 acres of land, the palace complex includes several temples. It is divided into two sections: one managed by the State Government and the other by the royal Wodeyar family. The Mysore Palace attracts more visitors annually than the Taj Mahal!
- Srirangapatnam Fort - Srirangapatna is a historic town that served as the capital of the Wodeyar dynasty and later of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It is an island formed by two branches of the Kaveri River, known as the Ganges of the South. The town is enclosed within a double-walled fortress, initially built in the 16th century and later fortified in the 18th century. The fort is surrounded by water on three sides and a moat on the fourth. Srirangapatna offers numerous attractions for both Indian and international visitors, including the fort itself, the Sriranganatha temple, Col. Bailey’s dungeon, the ruins of Tipu’s palace within the fort, the impressive summer palace ‘Daria Daulat Bagh’ outside the fort, Tipu’s mausoleum ‘Gumbaz’, river ghats for bathing and rituals, the site where Tipu’s body was found, Jami Masjid and its minarets, and more. A drive around the fort area and a visit to Tipu Palace are recommended.
- Daria Daulat Bagh - Daria Daulat Bagh, meaning “Wealthy Garden,” is a delightful palace built in the late 18th century. Created by Tipu Sultan to house his harem outside the fort area, this palace offers much more than its modest exterior suggests. It features the largest battle-scene murals in the country, vibrant floral motifs painted with vegetable colors, 200-year-old block-printed silk on the ceilings, pencil sketches of Tipu Sultan’s final moments, a medallion minted by the British to honor their soldiers, a painting depicting the fall of Srirangapatna, beautiful paintings of forts held by Tipu, ornate teak wood carvings, period furniture from the 18th century, swords and other weapons from Tipu’s armory, a 3-D painting of Tipu by John Zoffany with eyes and shoes that follow you 180 degrees, cannons and cannonballs near the palace, and a garden with beautiful mango trees, araucarias, mahoganies, and more, including pigeon holes at the entrance.
