Exciting Old Town - São Luís is a surprising city, although it is often seen only as a gateway to explore the natural wonders of Maranhão, such as the famous Lençóis Maranhenses. But it’s definitely worth dedicating at least one or two days: it’s a place rich in colonial history, Afro-Brazilian culture and reggae music, all surrounded by a unique and lively atmosphere DA. The heart of the city is the Old Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The facades covered with Portuguese azulejos, the cobbled streets and the quiet squares tell a deep and fascinating story, even if partly overlooked. Some buildings are well restored, others in a state of neglect, but this contrast gives a melancholic charm The city overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and offers some urban beaches, although not all are ideal for swimming. A must-see before the Lençóis Maranhenses are enchanted.”
