Wonderful day - From the day I arrived in Baku, I knew I wanted to visit Khinaliq, but it took a long time to organise the tour. I really appreciate the manager of Skyup, who contacted me every weekend to let me know whether there was a tour or not. This was absolutely the highlight of my 6 weeks in Azerbaijan. The tour was perfectly organised, with everything happening as promised, and arriving back just after 8pm so that the day wasn't too exhausting. The stops are well spaced out, so you never sit in the bus for too long, and our guide, Murad, kept us very well informed about everything that we were seeing. Khinaliq is obviously the star, since it is so unique. There are actually three tiny museums in the village which you can enter for free to see objects from the houses or archeological finds. You can leave a donation, which I strongly urge people to do, as you can see from the village that extra funding is welcome. There is also a mosque, and besides that, the locals don't mind you wandering their lanes and photographing their houses and livestock. The drive up to Khinaliq kept us glued to the windows on both sides the whole way. The canyons, the rocks, the surprisingly green nature and the incredible views down the valleys really cannot be described in words. The first stop was the Candy Cane Mountains, which you can climb quite easily to get stunning views of the stripy rocks. We also stopped for various photo opportunities, and at a 'Honey House' on the way home. This is a cafe and shop selling baklava and other local products, including the special Guba baklava, which is topped with saffron. I recommend trying the rose and lemon water too. I cannot praise the guide or the driver enough. This was a great day out, and I won't hesitate to book with Skyup again!
