Park and National Palace of Pena - Begin the journey from the hotel for an unforgettable day. Sintra, located 30 km from Lisbon, boasts a unique micro-climate that ensures constant freshness and supports lush vegetation, creating a mysterious and romantic atmosphere. The Pena National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Monserrate Palace are the key monuments. Upon arrival, travel to the top of the Serra de Sintra to visit the Palácio da Pena, perched on a rock 500m above sea level, offering views of the coast up to Lisbon. It is a prime example of 19th-century architectural Romanticism and is Europe’s first romantic palace, predating the famous Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany by about 30 years.
-
Quinta da Regaleira - Situated in the heart of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is a monument rich in mystery and symbolism. Its owner, Carvalho Monteiro, also known as Monteiro dos Milhões, was intrigued by alchemy, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism, and the Templars. The estate was transformed into a place filled with mystical symbolism, designed for contemplation, meditation, and the celebration of ancient mysteries. Today, it is one of Sintra’s most visited attractions, offering a mysterious journey through secret tunnels, exotic gardens, lakes, caves, and structures like the renowned Initiatory Well, which spirals 27 meters into the earth.
-
Parque e Palacio de Monserrate - A haven for writers, Monserrate attracted many foreign travelers, particularly English ones, who praised its beauty in travel accounts and engravings. When Francis Cook, a wealthy 19th-century English industrialist and art collector, visited, he was captivated. This passion led to the creation of a Romantic masterpiece: the Park and Palace of Monserrate.
-
Sintra National Palace - The current Palace of Sintra comprises several royal palaces, built, expanded, and adapted over centuries. The foundation date of the oldest palace remains a mystery, likely dating back to the 10th or 11th century when Sintra was under Islamic rule. By the end of the Middle Ages, the Palace of Sintra was a central hub managed by the Queens of Portugal and a favored retreat for Portuguese monarchs. The region’s abundant game, cool summer climate, and refuge from plagues in the capital made Paço de Sintra a popular destination. It holds memories and has witnessed significant events in Portugal’s history, offering visitors a chance to travel through time and explore lives vastly different from our own.
-
Palacio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - The Queluz Palace, adorned with exquisite decorations and valuable pieces, became the official royal residence, especially for the Portuguese prince regent, the future D. João VI, and his family until they fled to Brazil due to the French invasions. D. Pedro IV, or D. Pedro I of Brazil, was born here. It also discreetly housed Queen Maria I, “Maria Louca,” as her mental health deteriorated following D. Pedro’s death.
-
Castelo dos Mouros - Prepare for an invigorating climb to the Castelo dos Mouros. At the summit of the Sintra mountain range, discover one of Portugal’s most iconic historical sites. Built by Muslims in the 8th or 9th century, the castle’s walls were captured by D. Afonso Henriques during Portugal’s founding in 1147. Explore the Romanesque chapel that has endured since the Christian Reconquista and follow the thrilling path that reveals the entire Lisbon region.
-
Centro Historico de Sintra - This tour, closely tied to gastronomy, includes time to explore Sintra’s historic center, with a stop at Pastelaria da Piriquita to savor the Pillow of Sintra and Queijada de Sintra.
-
Cabo da Roca - After a delightful lunch, continue the Sintra Tour through the mountains to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Continental Europe. Enjoy the stunning cliffs and views, and read the inscription by the celebrated epic poet Camões: “here where the land ends and the sea begins.”
-
Centro Historico de Cascais - Traditionally a fishing village, Cascais developed significantly in the 14th century as a busy port for ships heading to Lisbon. However, it was in the 19th century, with the rise of sea bathing, that Cascais transformed into a fashionable summer resort. King D. Luís I of Portugal led this change by converting the citadel fortress into the monarchy’s summer residence in 1870. The nobility followed suit, building mansions and villas, transforming the village. Visitors are encouraged to stroll through the streets, enjoy high-quality shops, or relax on one of the many terraces.
