Day 1: Bucharest – Sinaia – Brasov – Sighisoara
Peles Castle - Constructed by Romania’s first king in the latter half of the 19th century, Peles Castle is now the most frequented castle in Romania and a must-see destination. It is regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful castles and was named the most stunning castle in the world by Global Traveler USA in 2015, alongside Prague Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.
Brasov Historical Center - Known as “Kronstadt” in German, meaning “City of the Crown,” Brasov will captivate you with its over 500-year-old architecture, breathtaking mountain views, the Black Church, which is the largest Gothic church in Eastern Europe, Saint Nicholas Church, the First Romanian School, the Rope Street (one of Europe’s narrowest streets), and Saint Catherine’s Gate.
Centrul Istoric Sighisoara - Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts one of the best-preserved medieval citadels, and the only one still inhabited in Europe. The impressive Clock Tower is the citadel’s main landmark, offering a majestic view of the entire area from its top. Other attractions include the Covered Staircase, the Church on the Hill, and the former birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, who inspired Bram Stoker’s novel “Count Dracula.”
Day 2: Sighisoara – Turda – Alba Iulia
Turda - The Turda Salt Mine is among the oldest in the world, with its origins in medieval times for salt extraction, first documented in 1271. The mine features a collection of stunning rooms and galleries, including The Iosif mine, known for its powerful echo, accessible via salt-carved balconies, the Crivac room, showcasing a rudimentary installation from 1864 for lifting salt rocks, the Terezia mine with its impressive 90 m height and 87 m diameter halls, the Rudolph mine, the last site of salt extraction in Turda, and the Gizela mine, now used solely for health treatments. The underground gallery is a geological reserve, not open to tourists.
Alba Iulia - Alba Iulia’s history dates back to the Dacian tribe, who built the first fortress here. The Romans conquered the area in 106, establishing a fort called Apulum. The current structure dates to the early 18th century when the Hapsburgs constructed one of the finest Vauban citadels in the region.
Moreover, Alba Iulia is the site of significant events in Romanian history, including the signing of the agreement to unite Transylvania with Romania on December 1, 1918, now celebrated as Romania’s National Day. Four years later, King Ferdinand and Queen Maria were crowned at the Orthodox Cathedral.
Day 3: Alba Iulia – Hunedoara – Sibiu
Corvin Castle - Travel to Hunedoara to explore the Gothic masterpiece of Transylvania, Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle, one of the most impressive Gothic castles in Eastern and Central Europe, featured in several films and festivals. Visitors can explore the castle’s interior, including the Golden Chamber, the prison where Vlad the Impaler was allegedly held, the knights’ hall, the interior courtyard, the Capistrano Tower, the Painted Tower, and the Catholic Church.
Sibiu - Upon arrival in Sibiu, enjoy a walking tour of The Old Town. The medieval citadel of Hermanstadt was one of seven German cities in Transylvania. During the tour, experience the medieval town’s ambiance by visiting the Large and Small town squares, and for a bit of fun, test your partner’s honesty beneath the Liars’ Bridge, a popular Sibiu monument.
Day 4: Sibiu – Cozia – Bucharest
Cozia Monastery - Established in 1388 as a typical Byzantine church, Cozia Monastery houses the tomb of its founder, Mircea the Elder, ruler of Wallachia from 1386 to 1418. The journey continues to the Curtea de Arges Monastery, built between 1512 and 1517 and later rebuilt during King Carol I’s reign in 1886. This monastery is renowned for its remarkable architecture, with exterior walls adorned with unique stone embroideries. Inside, the founder, ruler Neagoe Basarab, and the first two Romanian royal couples are interred.
