Bucharest – Peles Castle – Bran Castle – Rasnov Fortress – Brasov
Peles Castle - In the morning, the tour guide will collect guests from their hotel in Bucharest. The journey begins with a drive to Sinaia to explore Peles Castle, one of Romania’s most esteemed castles. Renowned for its stunning architecture and picturesque location, Peles is often cited as one of the world’s most magnificent castles. Historically, it served as a summer retreat for the Romanian Royal Family until it was confiscated by the communist regime.
Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) - Following the Peles Castle tour, the group will proceed to Bran, a quaint village near Brasov, to visit Bran Castle. Inspired by Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula, Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, has gained international fame. This notoriety makes the Halloween party at Bran particularly popular today. The castle’s isolated appearance and Gothic architecture, typical of Transylvania’s Middle Ages, have forged a lasting link to Vlad the Impaler. The Dracula tour will delve into how Vlad the Impaler became associated with the Dracula legend. Constructed in the 13th century by the Saxons of Brasov, the castle stands on the site of an earlier wooden fortification built by the Teutonic Knights.
Rasnov Citadel: Garden and Panoramic View - After exploring the castle, the tour will follow the ancient trade route through the Carpathian Mountains to Rasnov, a medieval citadel perched on a hill since the 14th century. The day concludes with a visit to Rasnov, followed by a return to the medieval city of Brasov for an overnight stay. If time permits, guests can enjoy an evening stroll through Brasov’s Council Square.
Brasov Historical Center - If time allows, guests can take an evening walk through Brasov’s Council Square.
Brasov – Fagaras Citadel – Rupea – Crit – Sighisoara Citadel
Fagaras Fortress - In the morning, the tour departs for Fagaras, home to a formidable citadel from the feudal era. The Fagaras Citadel boasts a robust defensive system, making it one of the few structures never conquered. Surrounded by a moat and dual walls, it is exceptionally resistant to sieges.
Cetatea Rupea - In Rupea, visitors will discover one of Romania’s oldest archaeological sites, first documented in the 14th century. However, evidence of human settlement dates back to the Paleolithic and early Neolithic periods. Rupea Citadel underwent complete refurbishment in 2013. Legend has it that Decebalus, the renowned Dacian king, took his own life here during the Second Dacian War in 106 AD.
Centrul Istoric Sighisoara - While Transylvania’s citadels and castles are remarkable, the medieval villages that preserve Europe’s medieval lifestyle should not be overlooked. En route to Sighisoara, the tour stops in Crit, a Saxon village with traditional houses and exquisite cuisine. Here, guests will savor a delightful meal before continuing their journey. Upon arrival in Sighisoara, the exploration of this charming medieval town begins, featuring narrow cobblestone streets and vibrant houses. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Sighisoara Medieval Citadel has been continuously inhabited since its founding in the 13th century. The city is famous for its talented street performers and local artisans who offer demonstrations for tourists eager to learn about historical arts. In Citadel Square, visitors can see Vlad Tepes House (or Count Dracula). Until 1435, Vlad Tepes resided in the ocher-colored house with his father. Today, the ground floor houses a restaurant, while the first floor is home to the Museum of Weapons.
After a full day, guests will check in and spend the night in Sighisoara.
Sighisoara – Richis – Biertan – Alba Iulia – Hunedoara - Sibiu
Biertan Fortified Church - On the third day of the medieval tour of Romania, the group will head to Richis, a small village near Biertan, which features a Gothic fortified church over 500 years old.
From Richis, the tour proceeds to Biertan, home to Romania’s largest fortified church, encircled by three walls and protected by six towers and three bastions. Biertan is one of Transylvania’s villages with fortified churches and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre since 1993.
Cetatea Alba Iulia - The next stop is Alba Iulia, a city with a rich history spanning over 2000 years. Over time, it has been the site of a Roman Fort, a medieval defense fortress, and ultimately, a large star-shaped fortress with bastions in Romania, built in the Vauban style.
Castelul Corvinilor - Among the most impressive Transylvanian castles is the renowned Corvin Castle. Built in a Gothic style, it features tall towers adorned with stone-carved dragons, reminiscent of a fantasy novel. Also known as Hunyad Castle, it captivates not only with its architecture but also with the story linking it to John Hunyadi, a legendary hero who helped thwart the Ottoman invasion.
Sibiu - After visiting Corvin Castle, the tour continues to Sibiu, where guests will spend the night in a charming boutique hotel.
Sibiu – Curtea de Arges – Bucharest
Sibiu - The fourth and final day begins with a city tour of Sibiu, a city that is a must-see on a medieval tour of Romania. Sibiu’s features resemble those of a German medieval town, with a large square surrounded by iconic buildings. Guests will enjoy a walking tour through the city, crossing the famous Bridge of Lies to reach the defensive walls.
Curtea de Arges Monastery - After departing Sibiu, the tour travels through the Carpathian Mountains, following the Olt River’s bank and taking in the stunning scenery. The final stop is Curtea de Arges, where visitors will explore one of Romania’s most beautiful Orthodox Churches and the Necropolis of the great Romanian kings.
