You’ll quickly understand why upon arriving at Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. The area’s terrain is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress, which rises an impressive 660 feet (200 m) from the jungle below. Visitors can climb 1,200 steps to explore one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. Be sure to look for the colorful frescoes on the walls and the gigantic lion paws sculpted into the rock.
