- Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - The Ancient City of Sigiriya is home to the remnants of a former Sinhalese capital, featuring a rock fortress and palace. Constructed at the end of the 5th century by Prince Kasyapa, this vast complex includes gardens and a palace built by King Kasyapa. Following his death, it reverted to a monastery complex until the 14th century. Anticipating Mogallana’s return, Kasyapa is believed to have built his palace atop Sigiriya as both a fortress and a pleasure palace. Mogallana eventually arrived and declared war. Chronicles recount that the battle-elephant altered its course for strategic advantage, but the army misinterpreted this as the King’s retreat, leading them to abandon him. Mogallana restored the capital to Anuradapura, transforming Sigiriya into a monastery complex. The beautifully landscaped water gardens feature an intricate water distribution system, offering a stunning view from halfway up the rock.

The Dambulla Rock Temple is the largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka, with the rock towering 160m above the surrounding plains. Major attractions are spread across 5 caves, containing statues and paintings related to Lord Buddha and his life. The murals cover an area of 2,100 m², depicting scenes such as Buddha’s temptation by demon Mara and his first sermon. Dambulla is a unique and significant historical site due to the amalgamation of materials from various eras. Nearby, deep within the jungle, lies the Iron Wood Forest and the largest Rose Quartz Mountain Range in South Asia. The site was declared a human sanctuary by King Dappula in the 10th century AD.
