Best Way to See Snow Monkeys from Tokyo - What a magical experience to see the snow monkeys and ice huts with knowledgeable guides fluent in English and French. I had my doubts about so many hours in the bus, but they break it up in such a way and with ample walking at the park that it doesn’t seem that long, even when as in my case traveling with a small child. Guides really went out of their way to welcome us, holding a little oragami display and cultural art lesson for the under 10s en route. They also made sure I was ok to carry my 2-year old 15 kilo er up the hill in the snow solo, at one point helping them to pretend “ski”. I was not that excited about the ice huts, but it was far and away my child’s favorite part, ducking in and out of the igloos and enjoying a local flavor (apple) ice cream. Only sad part was would loved to have been able to spend at least a few days exploring the Japanese Alps and beautiful Nagano, but that was due to our tight schedule not the tour company. Definitely recommend for anyone with or without kids hoping to see the monkeys!

Well put together trip to... - Well put together trip to see the snow monkeys. It was a long day as the drive to/from Nagano is 3.5-4 hours not including restroom stops and a lunch break on the way there. Not much in terms of tour guide discussion, but that's ok. If you want to do just a day trip to see the snow monkeys, this is a great way to do it.

Long day trip to see snow monkeys 🐒 - Be prepared for a loooonnnggg day! 8am pick up. Then 3 and a half hour drive with comfort stop. Lovely scenery the further north you drive. Included lunch was OK. Then another 20 minutes drive to reach the Monkey park. Steep 10 minute walk up from coach stop, on slippy slushy road, before reaching forest path which is another mile walk along very slippy snowy path to reach entrance where monkeys are. Further steep steps to reach gorge where monkeys are found. Lots of monkeys (50 - 60 ish), some in thermal pool, others down by steam. Overall time spent looking at the monkeys 30-40 minutes. Included Igloo village visit was a bit of a waste of time, when there is another 3 and a half hour drive back. 2 coach drivers and 2 guides on the day I went, and they were very good. Got dropped back at 8:30pm.

Snow Monkeys fay out - Big day out, our guide Shin was excellent. The monkeys amazing and the walk there in winter interesting. Would be great to travel home via train rather than bus.

Cute Monkeys, Lose the Rest - The monkeys were adorable and for that reason I give it a 4/5 rating. The guides were patient and kind and kept the tour moving as best the could. The meeting point was clear. Be aware it is a long day trip from Tokyo and our bus was cramped (would have been fine for shorter distances but this was far). We stopped twice on the way to the snow monkeys - once for snacks/toilets, the next for lunch. The beef lunch was a mediocre hotpot that most people didn’t finish - if I could do it over, I would skip the tour lunch and pack sandwiches. We finally got to the monkey park, which involved a slick hike behind crowds of slow people. It isn’t a technically difficult walk - we saw someone do it on crunches - but expect to slip and fall. It took an hour to walk the mile due to crowds. The monkeys were cool and we got lucky to see so many on the day we went - our guide assured us this was not common. We spent maybe 20 minutes with the monkeys and had to start our return trek to the bus. The tour then took us to the snow shelters which was cute but by that point missable - we were given half an hour to buy food and take photos. Other visitors we saw were doing their own hot pot in the snow huts. Then we stopped twice on the way back to Tokyo for toilets and got back after 9 pm. What would have been a better journey would be to shoot straight up to the snow monkeys, spend more time there, then have a late lunch in the snow village, where there were options for hot pot or ramen. The monkeys were so cute and for that I’m glad we did the trip, but it was a lot of time in a very cramped bus. If you go, skip lunch and pack snacks.

Get some traction and enjoy the snow - We had traffic delays for the first two hours driving out of town due to heavy holiday traffic. Our tour guide Yuki provided a running narrative explaining every place we passed. We stopped for a satisfying lunch before going to see the monkeys. The area is beautiful but treacherous. Most members of our group, even the young athletic men, slipped and fell at least a couple of times. It was worth it to see the mothers and babies soaking in the water! A great day overall.

Overall great - I would give it 5 stars if we spent more time at the monkeys, less time at lunch, which tasted great, and less time at the snow village.

A nice hike to reach the... - A nice hike to reach the hot spring to see the monkeys. The timing provided was rather rushed, would appreciate a bit more time especially when it was an icy path.
