- Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) - The Shanghai Museum was established in 1952, initially housed at the Old Jockey Club at 325 Nanjing West Road. In October 1959, it relocated to Zhonghui Building at No. 16 Henan South Road. It is currently situated at 201 Renmin Avenue, Huangpu District, south of People’s Square in Shanghai.
In August 1993, construction began on the new Shanghai Museum, which officially opened on October 12, 1996. The museum spans 39,200 square meters, with 11,000 square meters of floor space. It features two underground levels and five above-ground floors, standing 29.5 meters tall, with a total investment of 570 million yuan. The new building combines a square base with a circular top, symbolizing the Chinese concept of “Tianyuan Place.” The museum’s name was inscribed by Chen Yi, the first mayor of Shanghai after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
