Deoksugung Palace - Deoksugung is one of Seoul’s Five Grand Palaces. Initially used as a temporary palace in 1593 following the Japanese invasion, it became an official palace named Gyeongungung in 1611. When Emperor Gojong proclaimed the Korean Empire in 1897, it served as the imperial palace and included Western-style buildings. A significant fire in 1904 destroyed many structures, and in 1907, after Gojong’s abdication, it was renamed Deoksugung. During Japanese rule, the palace was significantly reduced and incorporated into a public park. After liberation, it hosted the U.S.–Soviet Joint Commission, and restoration efforts have been ongoing since.
