Ephesus was the principal conduit for all voyagers and merchandise coming from the river valleys of Cayster and Maeander, regions like Galatia, as well as far-off lands such as the Euphrates and Mesopotamia, providing a direct route to Rome. In subsequent eras, when the Asian Christians were captured and sent to face the lions in Roman arenas, Ignatius referred to Ephesus as the Route of the Martyrs.
