Great Arctic Char and Brown Trout Trip - My wife and I went on a very enjoyable brown trout and Arctic Char fly fishing trip with guide Mike from Go Fishing Iceland. Mike made us feel welcome, was very personable and a great guide. We caught our first ever Arctic Char and we also caught some nice brown trout.

Excellent Fishing day! - We had Mike take us on a fly fishing and spin rod fishing tour. Mike arrived a few minutes early for our start time, was very professional and friendly to us. He kept a great conversation, and provided a lot of useful tips, and showed us how to fish for arctic char and brown trout. Gofishing provided everything that we required for the day, from waders, to rods, reels, flies, as well as tied them for us, and switched it fairly often depending on how it was performing. Mike also netted the fish, and took photos for us. Great experience.

Awesome fishing trip in Iceland - Amazing fishing experience with Go Fishing Iceland! It was a last minute decision and Mikael the owner was very responsive and flexible to accommodate our schedule. We met up on a chilly windy day at lake Laugarvatn but he brought all the necessary gears and waders and boots for us. Mikael was very kind and patient with my son and I can tell he is a very good fisherman and loves what he is doing. He was just as excited when my son caught a fish. Within an hour, we were able to catch several trouts. It was definitely a highlight of our trip and we are planning to come back in the summer to go salmon fishing with Mikael again.

Iceland -- April -- On the Fly - It's Iceland. It's April. I'm fly fishing. Doesn't that say enough? For the more curious readers, I will say that regardless of all the fishing shows, magazines, blogs, or pod casts, you need to temper your expectations. All fly fishers know that it's called fishing and not catching. If all we cared about was catching, we would be tying on a nightcrawler and not a PMD. Thus, my expectations were low. The wind blows in Iceland, PERIOD. You need to be a capable and/or technical fly caster to master the wind. This goes for almost any fly fishing destination. My guide Mikael A and I battled hail, rain, snow, and wind. We were also blessed with 20 minutes of pure calm sun. I caught fish on streamers in all those conditions. Money $$$! Guided fly fishing is not for small wallets. Not anywhere. Prices have absolutely skyrocketed in the last few years, and you already know why -- supply and demand. Everyone wants their fishing pic as their screen saver. People who have slim chances, no skills, and no respect for the level of difficulty have created impossible expectations. For first timers -- nothing in Iceland is cheap. It's an island, almost everything is imported. I have never been to Iceland. I didn't know Go Fishing Iceland or Mike A before my trip, but here are the facts: My expectations were met by Go Fishing Iceland and Mike A before I ever landed in Iceland. The guide services that I want to work with over and over again do the same things. They set proper expectations They overcommunicate They keep me abreast of changing weather patterns or other impacts (which I had on my trip because the earth opened up (lava) near Grindavik and almost cratered my trip entirely) They set a price -- it's my decision to pay it They provided everything I needed -- waders that fit, boots that fit, a place for me to fish They provided local tribal knowledge that makes me a better fisherman They got me to and from location safely and in a modern, clean, vehicle They provided local and personally tied flies They coached and instructed me They complemented me on my casting even when the wind caused pile ups They netted my fish They took photos and videos and sent them to me promptly -- so I had immediate bragging rights And Mike A knows where to find the good sandwiches to refuel your adventure I set my goals and they met them. I'm tired of combat fishing. I'm tired of the crowds. I don't want to see you on the river or on the lake. Mike A and I were the only people on this lake. I had the ONLY fly rod. I didn't see one damn person. That in itself was worth the price of entry. My expectations were not made or broke on whether I caught fish. I came to Iceland to survey the country, the conditions, and the fishing. Catching was a BONUS. I made difficult casts in heavy wind turning over a weighted streamer. I am in it for the challenge. If you want easy, if you want gimmes (that means something that is easily attainable in sport), then go to your local stock pond. Go Fishing Iceland and Mike A gave me everything I was looking for and asked for. I saw another review about not getting enough fishing time. I'm sorry for that. We never get enough fishing time. I will have you all know that unfortunately, I brought my wife on this trip (just kidding honey). And, unfortunately, my wife had a fixed dinner reservation. That didn't matter to Mike A. He told me he would fish me till dark. And he made me late for my dinner reservation anyway. I had hell to pay to the wife. But IT WAS WORTH IT. At the end of it all I ask myself the same questions: 1) Would I do this again? 2) Would I fish with Go Fishing Iceland and Mike A. Both answers are in the affirmative. Or stated another way, HELL YES!!! Plus, as a bonus, I made a friend. Mike A treated me like a friend. He was professional, had outstanding customer service, but we parted this day as friends. Because we worked hard and fought hard in these Icelandic spring conditions together. More details: The season just opened on April 1st. I fished with Go Fishing Iceland and Mike A April 11th. I was the first person to fish this lake this year. As mentioned, nobody else was out there. It was cold. It was windy. It was marvelous. The thick and heavy bodied brown trout smashed my streamer. Absolutely smashed it. There was never a doubt about a strike. The fish went angry airborne trying to throw my fly. The browns had deep rich coloration -- the pics cannot even capture the depth of color on these trout. I saw much larger fish and had shots at them -- they were toads approaching the 10 pound range. But they were not on the take during my trip. That leaves thoughts and dreams for next time. I'm a real and passionate fly fisherman and not a bot. I wasn't paid for this review and I had to Google Iceland fly fishing guide service to find Mike A and Go Fishing Iceland.

Fish with Björn/Mikael. Worth it. - Fished Holaa with Björn. Had rained a bunch and the river was a bit big - It was a “tough” day of fishing as the fish were being stubborn (5 rods, 5 fish landed). I wanted to catch an Arctic char, and Björn made it happen. Not huge fish on the Holaa, but an easy and fun river. The whole day went seamlessly and was very fun. An excellent service, and I cannot recommend enough asking for Bjôrn. Full disclosure: he may not look like your fly fishing poster child (face tattoos and all), but is the most genuine and friendly person I met in a country of very friendly people. And his fishing skills are remarkable. He will get you fish. Catch that Arctic char! Worth every penny.

Go Fishing and Makael Are Well Worth Doing! - I fished twice with Mikael from Go Fishing. The first was on the Holaa River. It was pretty poor weather but we still managed to land some Artic Char. The second trip was the Highland Fishing Tour, which was nothing less than amazing. It was an all day experience and the scenery was superb! When it says 'highlands', it truly was. My wife came along to watch and enjoy the outdoors and it was worth the trip just for the awesome outdoors. We fished two lakes, one being a lake within a crater. I landed one within the crater lake but had one on that took me to my backing.... but got away. Mikael was a consummate professional- patient, knowledgeable, easy to converse with. Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would do it again in a flash. I recommend Mikael to anyone.... you won't be disappointed.

Excellent and Professional Guiding Service! - We went with guide Mike on a full day guided trip on the River Holaa and Lake Thingvallavatn. Mike was a true professional and gave us a full day of fishing at the two locations. He provided us lunch of our choice and coffee at a local shop on the way to the river. He was very knowledgable about the fishing and a very nice person to talk to. He gave my wife lots of fly fishing instruction as she was more new to the fly fishing sport, which was very helpful and educational. We had success on the river and I was able to catch my first arctic char, checking off a bucket list fishing item. Mike took fantastic photos of the catches so I didn't have to worry about losing my phone or getting it wet. We highly recommend Mike and Go Fishing Iceland for any trips and will definitely use his services again the next time we are there.

A highly memorable experience angling on the River Holaa in Iceland mid-July. - I had a super day angling on the River Holaa, mid-July 2024. Mike was a wonderful guide, providing all the gear I needed, so all I brought from Canada was some of my own flies -- which caught many of my fish in Iceland too! Mike picked me up at 7am at my hotel in Rekyavik, bought me lunch and refreshments to have as a shore-lunch mid-day, and dropped me back to the hotel. He let me fish my own techniques as a highly-experienced angler, and he capably landed all my fish -- none lost at the net. In total, I released 7 nice Wild Arctic Char and 2 nice big Wild Brown Trout. Mike said we had one of the most-successful days on the River for the season. Highly recommend the guides at Go Fishing Iceland!
