- Thingvellir National Park - Þingvellir National Park offers a blend of stunning and unique natural beauty, being the only place on Earth where you can witness the meeting of tectonic plates. It’s also one of Iceland’s most historic sites, where the ancient parliament was held.
We’ll spend about an hour here, visiting the incredible Hakið viewpoint and walking down the largest rift in the area, situated between the tectonic plates and the location of the Wall from Game of Thrones.
- Geysir - The Geysir geothermal area may not be the largest, but with the erupting hot spring Strokkur, it is arguably the most breathtaking in Iceland, erupting every 4-7 minutes on average. Other hot springs are also worth seeing, including the dormant yet largest Geysir and many others that spout or bubble, displaying a spectrum of colors. Simply amazing.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Some say Gullfoss, or the Golden Waterfall, is the most beautiful in Iceland, and we have many. You’ll have to judge for yourself. It cascades about 32 meters (105 feet) in two stages, allowing us to enjoy it from two levels. The milky-brown glacier river color gives it its golden name—don’t you think?
- Fridheimar - Friðheimar tomato and horse farm is a pleasant stop on our way from the Golden Circle to the South Coast and a great place for lunch. At the bar, you can try the famous tomato soup with bread, tomato beer, a Bloody Mary, or even tomato ice cream. Take a walk around the greenhouse to see the tomato plants before or after your meal. Before heading back to the car, check out the Icelandic horses bred at Friðheimar farm.
- Seljalandsfoss - Seljalandsfoss waterfall, about 60 meters (200 feet) high, gets its water from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, also known as E15 after its 2010 eruption.
In summer, you can walk behind it, but even in winter, it’s worth a stop, especially in the evening when it’s floodlit.
- Volcano Eyjafjallajokull - Eyjafjallajökull is visible in good weather from much of the South Coast route. If the weather is favorable, we’ll stop at a viewpoint to learn about this massive volcano that disrupted so many travel plans in 2010.
- Skógafoss - Skógafoss waterfall is fed by a mountain pass between two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, making it enormous. It falls about 60 meters (200 feet), and you can walk so close to the bottom that you can almost touch it.
- Reynisfjara Beach - One of Iceland’s most stunning beaches, not just for its black sand stretching in all directions. Here, you can also enjoy views of the famous Reynisdrangar sea cliffs. The basalt columns and surrounding lava formations are incredible. A stop at the Black Sand Beach is a must-see.
