Thingvellir National Park - Recognized for its cultural significance, Thingvellir was added to the World Heritage list in 2004. This area is part of a fissure zone in Iceland, located on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Discover the rich history from the Viking era to the present day in this stunning and picturesque location. Thingvellir National Park is protected by a special law. No other place captures the essence of Icelandic history and culture like Þingvellir by the river Öxará. At Þingvellir, meaning “Assembly Plains,” the Alþing general assembly was established around 930 and continued until 1798. Many significant events in Iceland’s history have occurred here.
-
Geysir - The Great Geysir and its surrounding area are alive with geothermal activity, featuring everything from steam vents to boiling mud pits and, of course, geysers. A geyser is a natural vent in the Earth’s surface that periodically releases a column of hot water and steam.
-
Strokkur - While the Great Geysir erupts occasionally, most recently in 2016, its companion Strokkur is a reliable performer, delighting visitors by shooting hot water into the air every few minutes.
-
Gullfoss Waterfall - This breathtaking waterfall cascades down a wide, curved three-step “staircase” before plunging in two stages (11 m and 21 m) into a 32 m (105 ft) deep crevice. Gullfoss is located on the Hvítá (White River), which originates from the glacier lake Hvítávatn at Langjökull glacier, about 40 km north of Gullfoss. The glacial water appears brownish due to the sediments carried by the glacial ice. Gullfoss is known as the “Golden Falls” because, on a sunny day, the water cascading down the staircase and into the crevice appears golden.
