- Cathedral of Segovia - Explore the final masterpiece of Gothic architecture with this entry pass. Access is via the north cross-wing. Its interior, bathed in light from Flemish stained-glass windows of the 16th century, presents a spacious, minimalist aesthetic, featuring a prominent Gothic choir from the 15th century, which is older than the cathedral itself, situated at its heart. Opposite the choir at the eastern end stands the main altar, adorned with a 1700s altarpiece crafted by Sabatini.
Encircling the sanctuary and apse are over 20 chapels. The third chapel to the right upon entering (Capilla de San Cosme y San Damian) showcases a wooden sculpture depicting the mourning of Christ by Gregorio Fernández, a Baroque artist of the 1600s.
The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, a creation of the exuberant Churriguera, is adorned with stained-glass windows, intricately detailed choir seating, and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a retable illustrating Christ’s entombment by Juan de Juni.
Facing the entrance on the opposite side, the south cross-wing leads to a door that opens into the late-Gothic cloister, predating the cathedral. This cloister, along with its ornate entrance, was relocated from the previous cathedral and is the handiwork of architect Juan Guas.
Directly beneath the cloister’s floor lie the burial sites of Juan and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón; their resting place within a space designed by Guas is fitting, as the trio were pivotal figures in the final era of Spain’s Gothic architectural period.
Adjacent to the cloister is a modest museum of ecclesiastical art, partially set within the upper-level chapter house, featuring a white-and-gold ceiling from the 17th century, a later instance of Mudéjar artesonado craftsmanship. The museum’s collection includes jewelry, paintings, and an assortment of valuable ancient manuscripts.
