Nesgjá is a beautiful freshwater fissure with the exceptionally clear water that is characteristic of Iceland. Often referred to as the Silfra of the North, it shares many qualities with the renowned Silfra in the South.
Tectonic plate tension and earthquakes create fissures that stretch from southwest to northeast Iceland. Some of these fissures are filled with water, typically glacial water, which has been filtering through lava fields for many years before it flows into rivers, the ocean, or these freshwater fissures. After percolating through porous lava rock for such a long time, the water is perfectly filtered and incredibly clear.
Nesgjá fissure is relatively shallow but stunningly beautiful. The lagoon is expansive, and as one of the instructors says: “The visibility depends solely on the quality of your dive mask.” Visibility can exceed 100 meters.
Occasionally, arctic charr, a type of salmonid, can be seen in the fissure.
