Pedro St. James, constructed over two hundred years ago, has served numerous functions such as – a cotton plantation, a courthouse, a prison, a Government Assembly and a restaurant. The government of Cayman Islands procured this property in 1996 and refurbished it to its 18th century splendor. It currently stands as an iconic testament to Cayman’s heritage. Most popularly recognized as the “cradle of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James takes reverence as the site where the decision to establish the first democratic parliament of the islands was made on December 5, 1831. In a subsequent event on May 3, 1835, the edict concluding slavery in the British Empire was proclaimed from this very site.
