Highlights
  • The Blue Eye - As unexpectedly spectacular as the coast of Southern Albania is (and it is magnificent!) what you would expect to see there are sights reminiscent of the Mediterranean more so than the tropics. Yet, as we know by now, Albania is the land of the unexpected! The country hides its small tropical paradise, aptly called the Blue Eye (in Albanian: Syri i Kaltër). Perhaps the most breathtakingly beautiful sight in Albania, the Blue Eye is located about a 30-minute drive away from the coastal city of Saranda on the road to Gjirokastra (all places to see, by the way!). Surely, the surprise factor adds to the beauty of the entire experience. To find the tropics in Albania is no small feat!

Perhaps describing the multidimensionality and depth of this surreal beauty is futile, but one must try! The landscape leading to the Blue Eye uncovers this anomaly of nature as you will find yourself surrounded by palm trees, wild ferns and tropical plants, as well as dense, mountainous forest vegetation of oaks and sycamores, all at once! This vegetation is kept lush and glorious by the spring flowing down the mountain into the Bistrica River. A total of eighteen springs are dispersed along the site! The freshwater spring from the Gjerë (in English: Wide) Mountain flows into the Blue Eye and creates a natural pool with depths of about 50 meters. Or, so they say! The actual depth has not yet been determined. Many divers have tried to get to the bottom of it, to no avail.

Additional Information

On this journey, we’ll visit the ‘Blue Eye’ National Park and Lekuresi Fortress. These two locations are popular tourist destinations, rich in history and natural beauty. The area is exceptionally scenic, with crystal-clear water springing from the Mali i Gjërë mountain. Among the 18 springs on Mali i Gjërë, this particular one is the biggest and also the most compelling. Its unique oval shape which resembles an eye, and its incredible depth of 50 meters have made it declared as a Natural Monument. The spring is set amidst lush and verdant vegetation. The location provides a fantastic trip for adults and children alike.

A place that must be visited in Sarande. 👍 - We choosed Leka Tours for the tour to Blue Eye and Lekuresi castel and we are glad. They excplaind us everything before we start the tour, so we knew how to organize the day. Blue Eye is a beautiful place where you will feel relaxed, you can even swim there but in April is a little bit cold 😁. Highly recommended Albania, highly recommended Leka Tours.

albania 2023 - Spectacular place, you have to walk a bit but it's also pleasant, the only flaw is you can't swim in my opinion with the right precautions you could.

Well worth doing! - Would definitely recommend! We had our own driver who was very polite and helpful and kept to himself. It is a very easy way to see two of the best tourist attractions in Saranda, both of which are definitely worth seeing. The value is great and it includes the price for entry to the blue eye

Blue eye ...a painting - Enchanting park, well kept, you can rent a scooter or choose to take a nice walk of about 20 minutes, fabulous in terms of scenery, immersed in nature, entrance fee is only 0.50 cents. You can easily have lunch there or bring some sandwiches with you. Colors of flora and fauna, nothing short of wonderful. I highly recommend leaving the crowded beaches of Sarande to do this day.

Really good experience,... - Really good experience, we were able to get picked up right from our hotel. The driver was very respectful and we had great communication from the tour provider about our pick up spot. This tour was really just a ride to the spots we wanted to see, which was exactly what we were looking for. I was glad they had availability later in the day and not just early in the morning.

Nice but I wouldn't do it again - Avoid in summer because high temperatures do not help at all. Very nice and well organized, for those who do not want to walk so much on foot there is the shuttle service (3 € each way p.p.) and possibility to rent scooters and electric scooters. Admission is 0,50€ so very cheap prices. Honestly in summer I do not Recommendation because once you get to the blue eye you can not even swim because it is all fenced (although many tourists still do not respect the rules). There is also the possibility to rent kayaks/canoes and take a tour to see the place from another perspective. Paid parking from 3 to 8€ approximately, depending on the hours but for what little there is to do 3/4h are more than enough. It has to be said that personally I would not do it again because it is not worth it, the blue eye is small and practically the “bridge” to observe it well is right above it and consequently taken by the people.

Gorgeous site but no guide at all. - The forest and springs were beautiful. The pick up by the company was chaotic. The exit of port was chaotic and we had to wait for the company rep to pick us up for a while. When he arrived he didn’t introduce himself or say anything, just motioned for us to follow him and get in a Van. He got in and drove us for an hour, did not say a word, no explanation, we had no idea where we were going, what we were doing, or how long it would take to get there. When we got to the park, another person joined our group but did not introduce himself, didn’t say anything. He turned out to be our “ guide” but never said anything about the park, just walked with us and took pictures. This should not be advertised as a guided tour or private. It was a group and a driver but no guide.

The national park was... - The national park was absolutely beautiful and we loved the hike! However, we were supposed to be picked up at 9:30, at 9:50 I finally called the telephone number and he said they thought it was at 10:30. Somebody showed up, at first his sign said Someone else’s name… Then he came up to us. He didn’t speak any English at all, so on our ride to the park, we asked about a couple of trees, etc. he couldn’t talk to us at all. I was very disappointed, my previous experience with guides is that they could speak English, and they could converse with me. He seems like a very nice young man, but I don’t think he’s been trained.
