Srebrenica Genocide Memorial - The city of Srebrenica is approximately two and a half hours from Sarajevo. The route takes us through the serene mountainous landscapes of Eastern Bosnia. While enjoying the scenery, a presentation begins, offering detailed stories carefully selected to help understand the complex “Fall of Yugoslavia,” which is essential for comprehending the Srebrenica genocide.
The first stop is at the battery factory, which was used by UN forces during the Bosnian war. The former headquarters of the Dutch battalion now houses one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most modern museums, the “Museum of Srebrenica Genocide.” Here, visitors meet the curator and hear firsthand accounts of survival in the Srebrenica enclave. The museum is equipped with multimedia facilities and a selection of films to aid in understanding the events leading to the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.
From the Museum of Srebrenica Genocide, the tour proceeds to the Memorial room, where visitors can listen to stories of the victims, crafted by a local journalist. A section of the Memorial room is also dedicated to those responsible for the massacre.
The identified victims rest at the Memorial cemetery, which currently holds 6,575 victims, with the number increasing annually.
After visiting the Potocari Memorial Centre, the journey continues to the city of Srebrenica. Once an industrial leader and one of the oldest settlements, it is now a ghost town. Srebrenica is also the location for lunch, as there are limited dining options nearby.
