Taking a trip to the town of Srebrenica is a distinctive experience in itself. The narrative of this compact industrial hub, noted for its robust industry employing over 12000 individuals prior to the 1992-1995 war, especially the silver mining (the Bosnian word for silver is ‘srebro’, which gave the town its name), has metamorphosed into a tale of a town that endured agony, treachery and genocide that has left an imprint on its contemporary history. Srebrenica, in the present day, is inhabited by a significantly smaller population of courageous returnees, stuck in a moment of time, and represents a site of mourning for the past. The act of remembering Srebrenica and paying tribute to its victims is of paramount importance to its current residents, instilling in them the strength to continue living in their homes alongside Serbs. You will have an opportunity to view genuine war photographs, personal artifacts of the slain discovered in mass graves, venture through the horrifying chambers of torture in the erstwhile accumulator factory and engage with survivors to hear their soul-stirring stories. The tour is predominantly conducted by young individuals who survived the war.
