We’ll also visit the Konjic Old Bridge, a stunning Ottoman-era structure that crosses the river, providing an ideal spot to admire the calm waters and the picturesque surroundings. The drive from Sarajevo to Konjic takes about an hour, offering scenic views along the way.
- ARK D-0: Tito’s Nuclear Bunker - Following our exploration of Konjic, we proceed to a remarkable historical site - Tito’s bunker. Just a short 20-minute drive from Konjic, this intriguing attraction offers insights into Bosnia and Herzegovina’s military history during World War II and the Cold War.
Tito’s bunker, officially known as the Atomic War Command (ARK) or ARK D-0, was a top-secret underground facility built to safeguard the nation’s political and military leaders in the event of a nuclear attack. Constructed in the 1950s under Marshal Josip Broz Tito’s leadership, the bunker remained concealed and operational until the 1990s.
Upon arrival at Tito’s bunker, we’ll embark on a guided tour through the underground complex. Explore the maze-like tunnels, discover the command center, and witness the detailed planning and engineering that created this hidden refuge.
- Museum Battle for the Wounded on Neretva River - Continuing our cultural journey, our next destination is the town of Jablanica, just a 30-minute drive from Konjic. In Jablanica, we’ll explore the region’s history at the Museum of the People’s Liberation Struggle, also known as the Battle of the Neretva Museum.
The museum is dedicated to preserving the memory of the significant events during the People’s Liberation Struggle in World War II, particularly the Battle of the Neretva. This historic battle occurred in the surrounding area and was pivotal in the resistance against occupying forces.
Upon arrival at the museum, we’ll have the chance to explore its exhibits, which feature artifacts, photographs, and documents from the battle. Gain insights into the heroic acts and sacrifices made by the local population and partisan forces in their fight for freedom.
- Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar - After visiting Jablanica, we’ll continue to Mostar, approximately 45 minutes away. In Mostar’s Old Town, we’ll wander through cobblestone streets, visit shops, markets, and landmarks such as the Stari Most (Old Bridge) and the Karadoz Bey Mosque. The Stari Most is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an iconic Ottoman-era bridge spanning the Neretva River. The Old Bridge Museum offers insights into its construction and history. The Karadoz Bey Mosque showcases exquisite Ottoman architecture. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Mostar’s Old Town, capturing memorable moments along the way. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a delightful dinner in the village. Savor the delicious trout from the Buna River, known for its exquisite flavor and freshness. Alternatively, you can arrange with your guide to have dinner on the way back to Sarajevo and experience the famous Bosnian roasted lamb. As we return to Sarajevo, the journey will take approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Use this time to reflect on the cherished memories and experiences of our captivating cultural adventure.
