Nestled at the intersection of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Montenegro, at the base of the towering Maglić, Volujak, and Zelengora mountains, lies the settlement of Tjentište. This location is where the once inaccessible canyon of the Sutjeska River broadens. A significant memorial complex was established in Tjentište to commemorate the historic Battle of Sutjeska (5th Offensive, “Operation Schwarz”), one of the most intense battles fought by partisan forces in 1943 against the combined German and Italian armies.
The evolution of activities in the area led to decisions for the expansion and development of a larger complex, which now includes: the Sutjeska Battle Memorial, an ossuary, a small brigade amphitheater, the Battle Museum, the Sutjeska Battle Memorial House (Spomen dom), and several memorials around Tjentište.
The Sutjeska area was designated as a National Park on January 13, 1962.
