Highlights
  • Sapporo - (9:00) Pickup at your staying hotel or Sapporo station

In the morning, assemble with your small group and guide at the starting point, approximately one hour after you’re picked up by air-conditioned minivan from Sapporo.

  • Hoheikyo Onsen - (10:00 ) Arrived Hoheikyo onsen

Once you’re fitted with a mountain bike, helmet and gloves, you’ll hear safety precautions and get basic instructions for riding.
Then follow your guide on an easy, 1.5-hour ride along a mostly paved road, starting from the upper Toyohira River, whose waters swell from mountain snowmelt into the Jozankei valley. Enjoy views above the river canyon and cross a suspension bridge, departing for Jozankei. It’s a steep, downhill ride to this traditional onsen town, which dates back to 1866 when an ascetic monk opened the spa upon discovering its healing waters.

Amid forested banks along the bountiful Toyohira River, watch steam rise up from every angle. Stop to enjoy snacks like onsen manju, a bun stuffed with azuki-bean paste, before departing via a steep uphill route.

  • Hoheikyo Onsen - (11:40) Return to Hoheikyo onsen, curry lunch and onsen

Your 6-mile (10-km) route ends at this natural hot spring, which was ranked as one of the best hot spring day trips by TripAdvisor. Settle into mineral baths indoors or choose from three large outdoor pools, where you’ll have panoramic views of the mountains as you relax against the stones during a 1-hour soak. Hoheikyo is one of Japan’s only onsen facilities to use 100-percent pure waters; the pools are fed by continuously flowing hot springs poured directly into the baths from the ground.
Afterward, sate your appetite with a lunch of authentic naan bread and Indian curry — Jozankei’s most popular food — at the onsite restaurant.

Lovely bike ride through Jozankei - I took this trip around mid-June 2024. Had a great time. Was picked up from our selected hotel as planned and driven into Jozankei. We then took a circular route that included some biking through the wooded areas, across some rivers, and also stopped for a treat. We finished at the onsen and was given free time to soak and get some honestly very delicious curry. It was on par if not more satisfying than the curry I can get in San Diego. The onsen day use fee and curry was included in the cost of the package so you won't need to pay for that when you get there. I would recommend bringing a large enough towel for you to dry with from your hotel and a change of clothes so you don't have put on your biking clothes. We were able to store these in the van while mountain biking so you do not need to take these with you on the ride.

Great guide on a well rounded tour - Our guide was very friendly and showed us many interesting spots in the area while answering our many questions. We experienced a great mix of the natural, historical, and cultural aspects of Jozankei, followed by a fantastic lunch and relaxing bath in the onsen. It was a wonderful day!

I would give 6 stars if I could! - This bike ride was super fun. We were picked up and dropped off our accommodation - so convenient. We were driven approximately 40 mins from Sapporo into the beautiful mountains and rode through scenic forests and towns. The lunch and onsen were great too. The bikes were in really good condition. We couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Jun for a memorable experience

The most ideal tour for families with teens and young friends - This is the best value and most meaningful experience if you’re really into Japanese culture. The beautiful nature of Hokkaido, the blend of the essence of warm spring and human longing to be in the nature, and the great Japanese and Indian food are all within inches reach… plus the tour guide Jun San speaks good English which helps a lot in the communication. He pick us up from the hotel and send us back safely in his spacious and clean van… the most important is the bike riding. The route is well and articulate planned, it was never boring and repetitive. We saw so much on the ride feeling and smelling the fresh sweet air and wind… it’s a wonderful experience if you’re with your family and your children… don’t miss the wonderful experience ♥️

Nature's beauty and a great guide - Jun was awesome... he set me up and we took a good ride. A nice curry lunch at the onsen afterwards where the outdoor onsen was fabulous. Yes...you will ride up the same hills you coast down!

Great mix of biking, sightseeing and Onzen - Great experience to get out of Sapporo and experience a real outdoor Onzen! Great Indian curry included too! Jun was nice and friendly. Only thing that would have been nice would have been a little bit more off-road. This is an easy excursion for somewhat for beginners.

Great experience outside Sapporo - Jun was a great guide! He didn't speak much but he definitely highlighted the important spots that needed explanations. He picked us up from the hotel, fitted us with the bikes and other gear and helped us get settled with the lunch and onsen. The bike route was mostly in the city as I believe the forest route was closed but he made sure we were able to get around Jozenkai just as well. The onsen was a nice end to it after a pretty long bike ride!
